Books for Writers
Annie Lamott
Bird by Bird
Lovely essays by a writer, for writers. A genre I usually disdain, but this one is worth reading, for a great deal of wisdom and even a bit of inspiration.
Brooke A. Wharton
The Writer Got Screwed (but Didn't Have To)
A Hollywood lawyer guides writers through the thickets of an institutionally corrupt and yet individually idealistic business. A must-read for would-be screenwriters.
(You'll notice there isn't any science fiction or fantasy on this list. After many years in which I read and reviewed heavily in the field of science fiction and fantasy, I burned out. For the past few years I have read only two sf novels, both at the request of publishers who wanted advance comments. There are no doubt many bright new authors with dazzling reputations whom I haven't even heard of. In short, I have become what is semi-affectionately known in the science fiction community as "an old fart." So if you were hoping for a list of my favorite science fiction and fantasy this year — sorry!)
