Uncle Orson Looks at American Culture 1996
An End-of-the-Year Wrap-up

Just as a musician has to listen to music as well as play it, I have to read constantly in order to write. A couple of books a week, on average, plus many magazines and the local newspaper (after all, how else can I read Dilbert?). I also follow movies intently, and always have, though the past few years I've had a particular interest, since I've been trying to learn how to write for film. As for television, I grew up in the fifties — need I say more?

In all this reading and watching, some of the things I've seen strike me with particular force. Either they gave me great pleasure or they provided a perceptive analysis of (or keen insight into) things that matter to me — or, in many cases, both. And, because I'm the type of person who becomes a fiction writer (i.e., someone so arrogant that he thinks even his lies and fantasies will be interesting to other people — so much so that he expects to get paid for it), naturally it occurred to me to share my list of favorites of the year with those people who might want to know what offerings of American culture I most admired or appreciated this year.
