What does the bit on the cover mean by "Direct sequel?"

Don't count on it. The dates on amazon seem to be wrong much more than they're right.

Yes! I've been waiting for another book from OSC forever. He seems to be the only author that writes books I get really excited to read lately. Which makes me sad, because I know the man has to retire someday. [Smile]

Is there any information other than it takes off where Ender's Game ends? Does the this novel conclude at the beginning of Speaker of the Dead?

Considering OSC was late on all the other Ender books, I wouldn't count on this one being out before 09'. Nice to see that he put a date on it though. [Big Grin]

I wouldn't even trust that he was the one to make that date.

I recall once once that somebody posted about the release date of one of OSC's books (one of the Women of Genesis books, IIRC), and OSC said something along the lines of "That's amazing! I don't know how they can know that, since I haven't even written the book yet."

Yeah, I was wondering about that, given that he just posted a question that I imagine goes towards his work in progress on Ender in Exile. Obviously it hasn't been written yet. How long does a book need to have been written before a release date in order to get it printed, bound and shipped?

As far as we know, it should take place relatively soon after Ender and Val leave the first colony. It's before Ender meets Jane.

Why should writers ever retire? They can write even when they are 100 with arthitis. They can type with one finger.

In recent years, the answer, I believe, is not long at all.

Also OSC claims to write his novels in a span of about 6-8 weeks. So he could conceivably not start for even a few more months.

Nice! Your birthday must be three days after mine, Catseye. But I agree with others that release dates aren't the most reliable things.
But good news--there is a cover already, which means that the "working title" might be the final title now. And "384 pages" seems pretty specific...

I'm thinking it has a little overlap with the end of Ender's Game actually, if the IGMS story Ender's Homecoming is any indicator. Ender's Stocking was a direct excerpt of War of Gifts, after all, so it's possible that this story is part of the upcoming book.

OSC's question on the forum was supposedly about Ender in Exile so that might indeed mean that Ender's Homecoming is included. In that case, this particular fragment happens before Ender and Valentine leave for the colony, thus the reason for the book's claim as a "direct sequel".

It's not listed on the Bibliography as a work in progress. There's a mithermages story, Bully and the Beast, and the perennial work in progress, Rasputin.

I do wonder if enough people were to pre-order the book, if he would then feel spurred to write it.

Since it has a cover and a (supposed) release date, and he recently asked for a little bit of fact checking help via a thread by KACard, I think he's probably already writing it, or at least about to start. I'm even optimistic enough to believe the posted release date.

This is true. George RR Martin has complained that Amazon has provided dates for his books when neither he nor his publisher provided any. He also said they provided a page count, when he wasn't even done with the book. He has specifically told his fans not to trust a date unless it comes from him.

have any of you read the product description?

- Orson Scott Card returns to his best-selling series with a new Ender novel.

At the close of Ender's Game, Andrew Wiggin – called Ender by everyone – is told that he can no longer live on Earth, and he realizes that this is the truth. He has become far more than just a boy who won a game: he is the Savior of Earth, a hero, a military genius whose allegiance is sought by every nation of the newly shattered Earth Hegemony. He is offered the choice of living in isolation on Eros, at one of the Hegemony’s training facilities, but instead the twelve-year-old chooses to leave his home world and begin the long relativistic journey out to the colonies. With him went his sister Valentine, and the core of the artificial intelligence that would become Jane.

The story of those years has never been told… until now. -

i guess the first thing to figure out is how official this description is. i'm curious how a 'beta-jane' could be tossed into the story.

*spoilers*

this is supposed to be pre-investment counselor but i'd imagine jane was sentient before she presented herself to ender. according to SOTG, the fantasy game was to be programmed to present itself to ender when he came to age. we see that jane does so in IC. is it possible that jane was doing some behind the scenes work while ender was unaware? was jane sentient but following the original programmed command to not introduce herself to once he reaches his legal age? i guess the main question is where and when we can mark jane's sentience.

if this was figured out i think it would be a nice addition to the timeline that's floating around on the net and to also include in the official enderverse companion.

I don't think that dust-jacket descriptions are usually written by the author, and in my experience they are often inaccurate or misleading in some respects

Yeah, I mean, look at the back of Xenocide. They try to make it all intense, but it's really a philosophy book. And the cover keeps calling Qing Jao "Gloriously Bright" as if English speakers can't handle her name. It's not like the translation means so much in the story.

And Ender's Game for that matter. The back cover sounds more like it describes the original novella than the actual book.
