On the day I was born The nurses all gathered 'round And they gazed in wide wonder At the joy they had found The head nurse spoke up And she said leave this one alone She could tell right away That I was bad to the bone --George Thorogood and the Destroyers, "Bad to the Bone"

"99 red balloons. floating in the summer sky. Panic bells, it's red alert. There's something here from somewhere else. The war machine springs to life. Opens up one eager eye. Focusing it on the sky. Where 99 red balloons go by."

In the neon wilderness and the asphalt jungle He carries his cross of passion Through the wreckage and the rumble
In those proud shoes, coming on up the alley In those proud shoes, walks all over the sky Then he tipped his hat just like Don Quixote And said don't let the rapture Don't let the rapture pass you by
"Soap Box Preacher," Robbie Robertson from the album Storyville
----------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS: I can't sing the praises of this album highly enough. Very rich, very cool, very touching without sentimentality. Robertson, a Native Canadian who was the guitarist for Bob Dylan's backup group (The Band), tells the story of a innocent, small-town young man's descent into the seedier side of New Orleans. It's set in the Storyville red-light district of New Orleans, back about a hundred years ago.
1. "Night Parade": he first leaves the sanctuary of a small hometown, "moving to the heartbeat of the city"
2. "Hold Back the Dawn": he falls in love with a woman from the wrong side of the tracks, asking her to raise up her hand and hold back the dawn, staying safe and warm with the world shut out outside
3. "Go Back to Your Woods": he realizes this city is more than he bargained for, and "when the night goes down on Storyville, if the women don't get ya, the music will"
And so on. There's a good site at The Band's website with video clips, audio files, and an extended history.

Must be something in the air, something brings me here to share this moment. We don't need to sleep tonight, stay with me until the daylight comes. Can you do it again? Can you do it again? Can you do it again? One last time.

Sheets of empty canvas. Untouched sheets of clay were laid spread out before me as her body once did. All five horizons revolved around her soul. As the earth to the sun. Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn. Ooh, and all I taught her was everything. Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore. And now my bitter hands shade beneath the clouds of what was everything. All the pictures have all been washed in black. Tattooed every day.

As time keeps foldin' we're old when our pour souls depart Whereas cold, cruel jokes now make you cry One day you'll take them in your stride All of the time we've resided here You'll see our chalices rise with ever endless tears And illusions, they fly, but someday soon will clear Just sit back and recline I'll guide you through the years Through the future years

I will paint my picture Paint myself in blue and red and black and gray. All of the beautiful colors are very very meaningful. Well, you know, gray is my favorite color. I felt so symbolic, yesterday. If I knew Picasso I would buy myself a gray guitar and play...
