What is staggering to me is just how fleshed out the characters were; virtually all of them felt so absolutely, effortlessly real. I believed in them utterly. I don't think I've ever seen a movie where this was done so well.
Anybody read the book that it's based on? I have to read it now.

No. I was sort of hoping I'd be able to watch it through and find out myself, but I don't know if I will able to. Do I want you to place up spoiler tags and tell me?
It was riveting, but I just couldn't take it. It's like what OSC said about the stories that attract us - Harry Potter is a hit because most kids and adults are NOT persucted orphans in a loveless home being stalked by a monster. Since myself with my own family has become awkward dissapointments that hurt more than anything, my taste in movies has gone from the fascinating and thougtful to the mind-numbing. Sadly, I think my current favorite is the Sound of Music.
Whale-Rider looked incredible, but I couldn't take it. I can applaud and reccomend it, though. Good job, twinky!
