20 years ago we each had a stero system, a small tv, my computer. Mini-frig. That was about it. Oh yeah an electric typewriter. Hair dryers, but those were usually used in the bathrooms.

The two desk lights came with the room but had to be plugged in, the overhead light I suppose counts since we're just talking about energy consumption so maybe I'll add that in.

We had a TV from the Goodwill that you had to warm up if you wanted to watch it - it had to be on for at least a half hour before the picture would progress from a narrow strip in the center of the screen to an almost-full screen.
My roommate would watch MTV on it every once in awhile but turn it off, ashamed, whenever I came in the room.
We did have a rather nice stero too. But that's about it. Posts: 8504 | Registered: Aug 1999

I have the advantage of having a kitchen where I live, so all the kettles, toasters, microwaves, mini fridges and rice cookers go in there.

My dorm room is probably a fire hazard. We have only 8 electrical outlets and each one has a some sort of splitter in it to allow us to plug in more than one device.
2 computers 2 monitors 2 printers 3 desk lamps tv 2 stereos 2 alarm clocks microwave mini fridge cell phone charger regular telephone 2 digital camera chargers 2 fans 1 electric blanket coffee maker (never used but plugged in just in case) christmas/chinese garden lights 2 strands and 1 flourescent light
I think that's about it. We plug in other things like hair dryers, curling irons, and clothes irons as needed. Usually we have to unplug something not in use like the microwave to do so, but it works out.

1 laptop 2 printers 1 computer tower 1 monitor 2 phones (both cordless, not really sure why) 1 fan 1 microwave 1 TV 1 refrigerator 3 lamps (used to be 4 but one died) 2 alarm clocks 2 cell phone chargers
Although the best room-tech thing I have ever seen came from a dorm last year. Chadbourne is the dorm on campus with the smallest rooms. Ever. These rooms are tiny - barely enough room for beds. But walking on a guys floor, I saw a room with a 50+" wide-screen TV. I was floored. How the heck they got that thing up the elevator is beyond me. But I did want to join in the football-watching...

No roommate, but I live in a studio apartment, so I'll share my current setup. When I'm gone, the only items running are the cable modem, computers, refrigerator, and alarm clock. Yeah, I like my power bills low, so the heater/AC can wait until I'm actually here.

Frisco Why won't you answer my IMs? Don't you love me anymore?
As far as power consumption goes, mini-fridges, the staple of dorm room life, are notoriously ineffcient. While there would be rioting across campus, if they banned mini-fridges, or required them to meet high energy efficiency standards (which the manufactures don't bother with because they know their target demographic doesn't have to pay for power) it would probably reduce the power consumption enough to compensate for all of the x-boxes and extra computers.
I contemplated community fridges, but those can be a really bad idea unless they are cleaned out of all debris at least once a week, given the slovenliness of some dorm occupants.
1 mini fridge (which we stopped using and unplugged after the post-Passover pickle milk incident)
Those were the only things that were always plugged in. I also had an iron, a hair dryer, and a curling iron. Our main freshman dorm was built as a temporary residence, but 50 years later they still haven't gotten around to tearing it down. No one had microwaves or anything like that b/c it would have shorted out the entire building. No one had televisions, either - we all just used the one in the floor lounge to watch The Simpsons. I can't imagine watching a lot of television or playing video games in college. No one I knew did, but maybe that's just because we were in NYC and there was so much to do.
Hey, Frisco, did you live in Carmen? edit: deleted weird empty list

In my day, we were only allowed to have a heating coil stuck into a cinder block. Used it to heat water for baths [shallow baths], heat water for ramen, heat water for cocoa or coffee, and to heat water to handwash our clothes and bedding in. Sometimes at night, we'd turn it on just so we could watch the orange glow -- usually the wiring wasn't very good so it would fade in and out in a rather hypnotic manner. Made for pleasant viewing.

4 computers (2 laptops, 2 desktops ...only 3 girls) two phones, one cordless and one landed. 3 cellphones tv/vcr/dvd refrigerator microwave hot pot two toasters two sandwich makers tons of powerstrips to plug in various and sundries an electric piano (much too big to be a keyboard) scanners/printers and shredders - at least 3 of each, I don't remember. PS1 and games three stereos 3 hair dryers 3 curling irons one clothes iron sheesh, I can't even continue - this is ridiculous. Our dorm room looked more like an apartment. Our apartment now, by odd coincidence, also resembles an apartment.

I've actually lived in four-bedroom townhouses for most of my university career. When I was still in residence, my room was comparatively spartan. Now, my stuff is mostly concentrated in my room, but a few things (e.g., my GameCube) are in other rooms.
