Have you missed the heavy handed preaching in the other series? Ones that spring to mind immediately are "Let That Be Your Battlerfield" (ST:TOS)and "The Outcast" (ST:TNG.) In the first, they meet a race who is half black and half white, separated by a line down the middle of their faces/bodies. The problem is with the entire race is the difference in which side is which color. (The people who are black on the left side hate the people who are white on the left side and vice versa.) In "The Outcast," Riker falls for a person of a race that has no sexes. S/He falls for Riker, too, and when discovered, is forced into a brainwashing procedure.
Star Trek has always been political in nature. The whole point was to make political/social commentaries on the times.
