I like most types of music. I like jazz, country, classic rock and blues. I'm not too crazy about rap because of the negativity associated with much of it.
I'm not asking for a critical analysis of the different genres, I'd just like to know what types of music Hatrackers listen to.

Just about everything. Old school rap is fine. The newer (1990's on) stuff is trash. No hip hop and very little alternative.

Lately, I mostly listen to music that fits in a whole bunch of categories: roots-rock-country-folk-bluegrass-reggae-jammy-jazzy.
I listen almost exclusively to live music, from bands who encourage taping and trading of their live shows. They are bands that Simon on American Idol would can in the first round.
My favorite band is Donna the Buffalo.
Other faves are: Percy Hill, Crow Greenspun, Jennie and Richie Stearns, The Horse Flies, Railroad Earth, Sim Redmond Band, and Hank Roberts.

I don't really care about the "type" of music. Never learned'em... So I just listen to what I like, regardless of race, age and sex.
Frankly, if you know what type the following are, feel free NOT to share Thank you... So, here are my favourites: U2, Bon Jovi, Queen, Phil Collins, Chris Rea, Sting, Brian Adams, Moby, Scorpions, Robbie Williams, Cranberries... And from the French ones: Francis Cabrel, Florent Pagny.

Since I travel all the time, my choice of music generally ends up on whatever is pre-programmed into the rental car radio. However, I've been totally hooked on The Thorns and Jason Mraz the last few weeks. I'd have loved the Barenaked Ladies concert, too.

Check out Natalie Merchant's new album, "House Carpenter's Daughter." The first song, "Sally Ann," is a Horse Flies song. They are sort of bluegrass-meets-Michael Stipe. Two members of The Horse Flies play fiddle and banjo on Natalie M's new album. It is beautiful.

There's essentially no music genre for which I cannot find a piece to enjoy. I really like stuff that's heavy. (i.e. Static-X, Stone Temple Pilots, Metallica, Disturbed, and the older System of a Down. These can all be fit into genres of their own but I'm trying to give a sense of what draws me in.) I like music when people really TRY, like when you can feel their guts in it. If you put the word heavy in front of a music genre, and then try to think of artists that could be included, I'll probably like it.
I like so many different things, that I'd go nuts trying to list them all, but let me make a list of bands or artists I like to try and give a fair example of my eclectic tastes.
Dan Fogelberg Charlie Daniels Band Michael Jackson prior to the mid-ninties Janet Jackson Madonna Blues Traveler Mary-Chapin Carpenter Wynonna Judd; also The Judds Brooks and Dunn "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" soundtrack "Newsies" Soundtrack Chorales of most kinds Frankie Valle and The Four Seasons The Monkees Static-X and the bands mentioned above En Vogue TLC Jurassic 5 early stuff from Bone Thugs-n-Harmony Jennifer Knapp Counting Crows Steve Miller Band Loggins and Messina Maire Brennan "Pure Moods" and anything by bands featured on it Rednex Worship music CD's like WoW Maxwell Primus No Doubt (the old stuff) Fiona Apple Anastasia Kick the Can crew Most eighties bands like Duran Duran, Dire Straits, and Peter Gabriel Baroque stuff like Pachelbel I like things from other genres too, it's just time for me to stop making this list...it could go on forever. My music tastes are, eclectic to say the least, the CD's currently in my car include: (in ARTIST - CD NAME format)
Lane 29 - The Lane 29 Orchestra (check them out, its a local group from South California that plays for charity! Buy a CD and support a charity!) The Beatles- One Brother Groove - Brother Groove Nirvana - Nevermind Audioslave -Audioslave Frank Sinatra - Live in Paris Blues Traveler - Straight on till morning Dave Matthews with Tim Renoylds Symphonic Pink Floyd Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon Cowboy Bebop - official soundtrack disc one Arturo Sandoval - Hot House and Trumpet Evolution
for Donna the Buffalo, The Horse Flies, and others. (Samite, Lots of downloads, samples, and great band descriptions. Most of these bands are festival bands. you will not find them on tv, for the most part. The Horse Flies did the soundtrack for "Rivers Run North," but other than that, they are off the beaten trackers.
Keith Secola is also cool. It is Native American rock. If you have ever heard the songs "Indian Car" or "Frybread," that is him.
Annie, I think Donna the Buffalo is coming to Salt Lake again this fall. It is not on the tour schedule yet, but they stopped there last year.

Raia, My 9 year-old daughter's favorite music has always been Broadway musicals. I saw Evita and The Wiz on Broadway as a kid. I will never forget it. I am taking her to see Cats next weekend. I grew up on Broadway musicals, because my dad and step-mom were into drinking and then breaking into spontaneous song. So many a car ride was spent singing. Did you ever see "Bye Bye Birdie? Another fave of mine.
Edit: I did not mean that they would drink, then DRIVE, then break into song. Although, quite frankly, that probably happened too.

Well, I like most kinds of music. I won't listen to Rap, country, and I'm getting iffy on the seattle grunge of the early to mid 90's. Can't stand Nirvana.
Right now I've got... Linkin Park Evanescence The Carbon Leaf Soundtrack from K-Pax and Robert Miles oh, and SR-71 and Collective Soul too.

I've found shunning the radio in favor of just trading songs between friends can be rewarding. I've discovered alot of really great music that has been almost completely overlooked in the mainstream.
Some relatively obscure acts that I strongly urge anyone to check out:
First, in a genre completely to themselves is Godspeed You! Black Emperor. They are a Montreal "collective" of around 20 musicians who create pieces of a unique symphonic quality. All I can say is if you are looking for something entirely out of the ordinary, you owe it to yourself to check them out.
The New Pornographers: this is the best thing musically to come out of my hometown in ages. They are a powerpop supergroup of sorts with a sound that is undoubtably their own. They have released two albums to date: Mass Romantic and Electric Version. Both are catchy, smart and complex. I can listen to songs like The Laws Have Changed and Letter from an Occupant over and over without tiring of them in the slightest. One of the real strengths of this band is Neko Case, who's voice is simply sublime.
This leads me to Neko Case's solo work, which I cannot find words to adequately express. Her latest effort, Blacklisted, is her third full length album. Unlike Furnace Room Lullaby and the EP Canadian Amp, Neko writes most of the songs on this album. Her skills as a songwriter certainly shine here. Her lyrics are rich with odd yet familiar concrete imagery, "It looks just like engine oil/and tastes like being poor and small/and popsicles in summer". The songs are cheerful and angry, uplifting and brooding, sweetly sad and more than a little ominous. These lyrics are perfectly coupled with her irresistable and versatile voice. The result is beautifully chilling and haunting.

Are you kidding? Chris Cornell is one of the top 10 male rock vocalist of all time. I'm not a huge Soundgarden/AudioSlave fan, but the dude has a voice made for rock.

I think what really sealed the deal for me was hearing Cornell's vocal work on the Temple of the Dog (self-titled) album.
That's a great album by the way. It features members of Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone and a pre-Pearl Jam Eddie Vedder. I bet even Slash likes this one.
