I was (am, maybe--not sure if my membership is up since I didn't renew for this coming year) a student member of The Society of Professional Journalists.
They sent me a package about 2 months ago for their student awards, whether newspaper, television or radio. Work submitted had to be made in 2003 and had to be for the school's paper, television or radio station.
I thought, well, I haven't written any articles last year. Foo. I thought--that piece we did for TV2 on the Eastern State Penitentiary would be great, but I don't think they would consider it journalist.
I threw the stuff in the recycle.
Today, I find out from a friend that The Eastern State pen thing won an award! I run to my professor and ask him, and he says "I never told you?"
It's not been officially announced, but we won 2nd place for our piece in Region 1 (which is New Jersey, Pennslyvania, New York and all of New England), for the Society of Professional Journalists Student Awards.
