I don't watch reality shows, but since I've begun watching TV again, I've happened to catch two and a half episodes of this pseudo-reality show on Sci-Fi network. Anyone seen it? They take a handful of "normal" people (read: those who have been interviewed and selected because they are overdramatic idiots), and put them in a home as 'guests' to these five "alts," or people who are living alternate lifestyles.

What a load of baloney.

Not all of these "alts" are authentic. The naturist is convincing enough, as is the "modern primitive," though I've never heard that term used for individuals who do the same things he does. The "witch" is full of crap, mixing theologies of different witch-like faiths to play the beautiful mystic. The voodoo priestess is interesting, and I'm witholding judgement. The "vampire" is the biggest crock of crap I've seen in a long time, and I've known plenty of such people.

It's almost enough to make me avoid television again! [Eek!] Luckily, it's on cable, and on a channel that only has one show that I want to see (SG1). Anyone else see this ridiculous show? Anyone have any realistic questions about these "alts?" If so, please, don't use this show as an indicator of what they're like. In reality (as opposed to reality TV), they are just like everyone else on the inside, and aren't usually so incredibly pretentious and superficial.

I'm surprised there hasn't been outcry over these characters giving goths or [insert subculture] a bad name. Change the "witch" into a Catholic exorcist and you have a lawsuit on your hands.

I actually watched some of that last night. I missed the beginning, but I saw the part where the "alts" were sitting around discussing the contestants and how much the had "progressed". They made it seem that the contestants were shallow if they didn't accept and/or embrace the alternative lifestyles. It seemed to me that the alts were just as shallow showing distaste for the contestants who didn't seem to be opening their minds to their lifestyles.

The witch seemed especially arrogant to me.

Yes, the witch is extremely arrogant, as is the "vampire" guy. Also yes, the contestants are also shallow. As for any lawsuits, it's a poorly timed show on cable, so it's probably not something many people give a hoot about. At least, not the kind of people who would actually go as far as a lawsuit over it.

Please. As if that would come close to the worst portrayals of Catholics in popular media...

When's the last time there was a lawsuit from a religious group over portrayals on a show?

There would probably be negative commentaty on such a show, but mainly aimed at the person participating in the show. There's been some negative commentary on Wiccan sites about the witch in MMW, and that's entirely appropriate.
