Anyone else heard this song? I find it absolutely hilarious, but I have no idea who it is by.
quote:
When they see us coming
The birdies all try and hide
But they still go for peanuts
Coated with cyanide

We've gained notoriety
with the Audobon society
and caused much anxiety
with our games.

They call it impiety
and lack of propriety
and quite a variety
of unpleasant names.

That's AWFUL!

Don't you remember the grandmotherly type in MAry Poppins and her beautiful song:

"Feed the birds
Tuppence a bag . . . "

*Runs away and cries*

Welcome to the wonder of Tom Lehrer.

*sings* All the world seems in tune
On a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Ev'ry Sunday you'll see
My sweetheart and me,
As we poison the pigeons in the park.

And if you like Pigeons, you'll love Pollution.

*snicker*

Shan, you're gonna LOVE Lehrer's sweet love song, I Hold Your Hand In Mine
quote:
I hold your hand in mine, dear,
I press it to my lips.
I take a healthy bite
From your dainty fingertips.

quote:
I'm sorry now I killed you,
For our love was something fine,
And till they come to get me
I shall hold your hand in mine.

He also had a song called "The John Birch Society," plus one where he just listed all the elements on the Periodic Table. It ended:

And these are all the elements
we've learned about at Havahd.
There may be others
but they haven't been discovaaahd.

Some of my favorite Tom Lehrer songs are the ones he did for Electric Company (possibly the greatest show that ever appeared on PBS). Who could forget, for example, the L-Y song, all about adverbs? Or Silent E?

"Who can turn a can
Into a cane?
Who can turn a man into a mane?"

I ache for the touch of your lips, dear,
But much more for the touch of your whips, dear.
You can raise welts
Like nobody else,
As we dance to the Masochism Tango.

...

Your heart is hard as stone or mahogany,
That's why I'm in such exquisite agony.
My soul is on fire,
It's aflame with desire,
Which is why I perspire when we tango.

The Masochism Tango

The first and so far only time a guy made a mix tape/CD for me, this was the first song on it. I love quirky guys.

also, let us not forget that the Electric Company gave us Morgan Freeman.

Dead puppies aren't much fun
When you call them they don't come
Dead puppies aren't much fun

My puppy died last fall
That's him lying in the hall
Dead puppies aren't much fun

You can't make them beg for food
You can try - it's no good
Dead puppies aren't much fun
They won't roll over, they won't play ball
They'll play dead, that's all
Dead puppies aren't much fun

When you pick them up they sag
When you walk them it's a drag
Dead puppies aren't much fun
Mummy isn't feeling well
I think she doesn't like the smell
Dead puppies aren't much fun
Not much fun

The scariest thing was when I was at AggieCon and singing this to myself... half the people in the hallway joined in. [Eek!]

Tom, sadly, we have been conditioned by the responses we get from most people we know IRL.

Tom Lehrer! Oh, his stuff is great! *sings a verse*

I'm definately living in the wrong generation. I don't even bother mentioning Tom Lehrer... the Marx Brothers... etc....to my generation. On my university residence form it asks "what type of music do you like?" Perhaps I should put Tom Lehrer. Have fun matching that one up.

I recently purchased a 3 disc set of Tom Lehrer and have had a lot of fun listening to it. Genius, sheer genius.

I don't remember Electric Company, but this set has some of those songs too and they are pretty funny.

But Vatican Rag is still my favorite:

Genuflect, genuflect!

Back in the Dark Ages, when they had these black disks called "records," my dad was listening to the brand new Tom Lehrer record with a colleague. The colleague is a devout Catholic.

The last two songs on "That Was The Year That Was" are Wernher von Braun and The Vatican Rag. After the last song, my dad was curious about his friend's reaction. Quoth he, "Now I think I know how Wernher von Braun feels."

Fish Heads

Chorus:
Fish heads, fish heads, rolly poly fish heads.
Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up, yum!

Chorus

In the morning, laughing, happy fish heads;
In the evening, floating in the soup.

Chorus

Ask a fish head anything you want to;
They won't answer - they can't talk.

Chorus

I took a fish head out to see a movie;
Didn't have to pay to get it in.

Chorus

They can't play baseball; they don't wear sweaters;
They're not good dancers; they don't play drums.

Chorus

Rolly poly fish heads are never seen drinking capuccino in Italian restaurants with Oriental women, yeah.

Chorus 4 times

Yeah.

"New Math" has not been in vogue since the 1970s. Where is this taking place? (And are you sure it's really "New Math" and not simply ill-remembered "Old Math"?)

Inspired by CT's confidence in me, I found the following:

SOMEONE ATE THE BABY
Titled "Dreadful" in 'Where the Sidewalk Ends'

Someone ate the baby.
It's rather sad to say.
Someone ate the baby
So she won't be out to play.

We'll never hear her whiney cry
Or have to feel if she is dry.
We'll never hear her asking "Why?"
Someone ate the baby.

Someone ate the baby.
It's absolutely clear
Someone ate the baby
'Cause the baby isn't here.

We'll give away her toys and clothes.
We'll never have to wipe her nose.
Dad says, "That's the way it goes."
Someone ate the baby.

Someone ate the baby.
What a frightful thing to eat!
Someone ate the baby
Though she wasn't very sweet.

It was a heartless thing to do.
The policemen haven't got a clue.
I simply can't imagine who
Would go and (burp) eat the baby.

(Am wondering if I should cross-post this to the "10 Great Reasons" thread)

Pfft. We can stick with Lehrer and still have plenty of baby-eating.

The Irish Ballad
quote:
About a maid I'll sing a song,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
About a maid I'll sing a song
Who didn't have her family long.
Not only did she do them wrong,
She did ev'ryone of them in, them in,
She did ev'ryone of them in.

quote:
One day when she had nothing to do,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
One day when she had nothing to do,
She cut her baby brother in two,
And served him up as an Irish stew,
And invited the neighbors in, -bors in,
Invited the neighbors in.

And when at last the police came by,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin,
And when at last the police came by,
Her little pranks she did not deny,
To do so she would have had to lie,
And lying, she knew, was a sin, a sin,
Lying, she knew, was a sin.
