that would be "The Ballad of Irving" by Frank Gallop.
He was short and fat, and rode out of the West With a Mogen David on his silver vest. He was mean and nasty right clear through, Which was kinda weird, 'cause he was yellow too.
They called him Irving. Big Irving. Big, short Irving. Big, short, fat Irving. The hundred and forty-second fastest gun in the West.Posts: 4344 | Registered: Mar 2003

OK, I wasn't gonna do this, but after rivka said "pfft" to Shel Silverstein, here it is:
"Carrot Juice is Murder" by The Arrogant Worms
Listen up brothers and sisters, Come hear my desperate tale. I speak of our friends of nature Trapped in the dirt like a jail.
Vegetables live in oppression, Served on our tables each night. This killing of veggies is madness, I say we take up the fight.
Salads are only for murderers, Coleslaw's a fascist regime. Don't think that they don't have feelings Just 'cause a radish can't scream.
CHORUS: I've heard the screams of the vegetables, (Scream, scream, scream) Watching their skins being peeled. (Having their insides revealed) Grated and steamed with no mercy. (Burning off calories) How do you think that feels? (Bet it hurts really bad.)
Carrot juice constitutes murder, (And that's a real crime.) Greenhouses prisons for slaves. (Let my vegetables go.) It's time to stop all this gardening. (It's dirty as hell.) Let's call a spade a spade. (...is a spade, is a spade, is a spade, is a...)
And you can listen and sing along here. (in mp3 and realplayer)

Well, I really wasn't saying "pfft" to Shel Silverstein -- I love his stuff. It was the fact that you seemed to think that we couldn't stick solely to Lehrer and still freak Shan out sufficiently.
And now I know why the scene with the fructarian in Notting Hill always seemed eerily familiar! (Hmm, no, the song is from 2003, so that can't be it. Weird)

On the website, the song originally appeared on a 2002 CD. But I'm pretty sure I heard it on Demento even earlier than that. I could probably find out - there's a site that keeps pretty extensive logs of Demento's playlists.
And Shan,
Here's an early (or late, if that seems more accurate) birthday song for you:
"Happy Birthday" by Weird Al Yankovic (partial)
Happy birthday Happy birthday to you Happy birthday Happy birthday to you
Well, it's time to celebrate your birthday, it happens every year We'll eat a lot of broccoli and drink a lot of beer You should be good and happy that there's something you can eat A million people every day are starving in the street
Your daddy's in the gutter with the wretched and the poor Your mama's in the kitchen with a can of Cycle Four There's garbage in the water There's poison in the sky I guess it won't be long before we're all gonna die
Happy birthday Happy birthday to you Happy birthday Happy birthday to you

Well, Notting Hill came out in 1999, and I think it may have been 2000 before I saw it. Still seems like it would have been before I could have heard the song, though.
Shan, watch where you stick that thing!
