Has anyone here played it or heard anything good about it? I am debating whether or not I should drop the 44 dollars it costs at wal mart. Or if I should wait a couple months for it to cost 20.
I feel the game begging me to buy it, but so far I have been able to resist.

If you've got at least a decent system, I'd say give into it.
The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is more than just "kill everything that moves". Granted, you do kill ABOUT everything that moves, but a few people you don't have to kill.
The levels are amazingly detailed, and so are the monsters. You should know that this is a *very* dark game, and you'll find yourself startled more than once when you walk in a door to find a mass of zombies and imps waiting for you.
Oh, there's a coop mod out for doom3 now, so you can play through the singleplayer mission with up to 4 of your buds (this would have been quite nice in the Alpha-Delta labs.

My roommate bought Doom3, and it appears to be a really great game. It really is dark though, he can only play it for about 15 minutes at a time, and he's they kind of guy that's hard to startle. The game is so intense that while watching him play, I even jumped, and I wasn't the one controlling the 'shooter'. If you've got a good system, I'd say go for it, but don't say I didn't warn you.

I've been playing it all day. It's good old fashioned FPS fun, the id way: lots of visceral thrills and not much else.
That's not a bad thing. I just think that some people were expecting a Half-Life quality experience, when they got something that was a little less.
It's definitely worth getting, IMO. The mods alone are going to be worth the price of admission. And, according to Carmack, there are going to be expansion packs.
The only thing that annoys me about the game is the repetative nature of the architecture. I know we're talking futuristic Mars setting, but couldn't we at least have gotten a little more variety in the architecture? I occassionally have a hard time figuring out where I am because everything is done in the same colors (also an id thing).

The game is amazing. The graphics are incredible, they do a good job of getting the story line across with teh PDA's and the gameplay is fun... and I have a pretty funny Doom3 story. But I'd say don't bother buying it, hacked copies were avalible online two days before it came out in stores. Go download it.

Alcon, You say the game is awesome, but don't recomend buying it!? How do you expect them to make money and more games? If a game is that good and you play, BUY IT.
Now, I haven't got to the store yet to buy my copy, but I will. Them I will share my impressions on it.

If you have $40 to spare and want to buy it go for it, if not download it. It won't be worth more than a few bucks in two or three years anyway, and if someone can't afford it or has to worry that much about money those who made the game aren't going to see that persons money either way. Hence, that person should download it so they can enjoy it too.

I hear the graphics are mind boggling but the game plays exactly the same way as the first two. Only, no corpses everywhere and the fights aren't nearly so epic in size.
I haven't played it and probably won't bother buying it until the price drops. I just don't care enough to buy it right away.

Damnit, now I wish I had bought it while I was in town earlier today. Right now I could have been scaring the balls out of myself. I loved getting startled while playing Resident Evil.
I think downloading it would take to much time over dial up. Are the cd's burnable?

I have heard many people say the game looks cool, and is fun for a while, but it quickly get old. It is supposed to be very spooky...but it relies to much on cheap scares (ie: having fake panels everywhere so monsters can pop out at you at random times).
I'd wait a few months and buy a copy off of ebay, that way you won't have to spend as much money.

You should see the levels towards the end of the game (before you transport off Phobos). You get to a point where you can't really go into a room without seeing a bloody corpse or spiderwebs (those things really freak me out) everywhere. Where you go after you leave orbit is, well, spectacular. The graphics and layout of each level is amazing (and no stupid loadings every 5 minutes like in HL!).
It does get a bit tedious at the end, but I think that was mainly because I knew I was so close and wanted to complete the game before the end of my weekend.
I think this was alot more fun than Half-Life, which got very boring about halfway through, as it felt like the developers just through that part in as filler or something.
I think I may have to hook up with some people online and play through again with a higher difficulty level (I ran through on Recruit last time).

What kind of systems are you guys playing it on? I'm wondering if I should even bother getting it because I doubt my system can handle it- especially at higher detail levels.

2600+ AMD Proc (2.01 GHZ) 9800Pro 128MB vid card onboard sound (using headphones cause I play @ night) 21" Dell Trinitron CRT
I play it at 1280x1024, medium settings. For the most part, I don't have any problems with lag, but in a few sections, it gets kinda choppy for a bit.
One thing, if you enable the console commands (I can't remember now, but you can google it), be careful of using the testlight command. It *really* bogs your system down in a hurry.

HardOCP has written up system reviews specificly comparing Doom3's ImageQuality&playability with the type of hardware used.

Why would I want to play Doom again? It was fun in it's day... but everything I've read about Doom3 makes me think I'd enjoying playing it for maybe 4 or 5 hours, then drop it.

yeah, I really should have gotten more when I bought the computer. Its not even like ram is all that expensive. Actually, now that I think about it, I might have some extra ram sitting around soemwhere.

so I returned Doom 3, it was sad but I could not play it. So instead I bought the original two dooms for 10 bucks and have been playing it all afternoon. It is awesome and every bit as good as back in the sixth grade.
On another topic, has anyone here played final fantasy online? If so how is it?

Why didn't you just buy another gig of RAM? You'll need it for your machine, anyway. Is it a matter of pride for you to operate your computer while it's half-crippled?

no no, its not a matter of pride. I am going to get some more ram soon once I get some more money. As it was I probably shouldnt have bought doom3 because of money issues. It just looked so good. My brother works for a software company and I think he said they have alot of spare ram just laying around that he can get me a really good deal on. So soon enough I hope to be back in the game.

I got BB to take back that opened playNC gamecard too.....but they know and like me there, so they believed me when I said it wasn't working.
Of course, it helped that I took in printouts of the BS playNC was putting me through....and offered to let them log on to my account to prove I wasn't scamming.

At first wal mart didnt wanna give me all my money back, but then I asked if I could talk with the manager and she gave me my money back right away. Managers always give you the money back. They wanted to give me store credit.

Back in high school (so, 7 years ago), there was a store that let you rent PC software. You "bought" the used game from them for ike $30, and returned it for a $25 refund several days later. Had to be a member there for $20 which went towards your first four rentals.
It was pretty cool.

Prometheus - you wouldn't happen to have a dual-monitor setup, would you? Doom 3 has definite problems with dual monitor setups. The cure, though, is to disable your second monitor in your Display Properties window. Your framerates should be much nicer after that.
I just beat Doom 3, actually. I was a little let down going into it: the Half-Life style pacing in the beginning lead me on a little bit concerning the story. But after a while, I remembered playing Quake 2 and realized that the two games have heavy design parallels. The light and shadow interplay is new, but the gameplay is Quake 2 and a splash of the original Doom (this is, of course, without having gone back to play any Q2. My copy is long gone.)
Anyway: after I realized that, I started having fun with it. Reading the PDAs were interesting enough for me to read all of them, and I'll probably read them again the next time I play it through. Definitely worth my $50. Now, I get to look forward to the mods. Posts: 753 | Registered: Mar 2001
