This thread was cool. I don’t recall the origins of the game, but I won’t let that stop me from bringing it back [Big Grin] .

The rules are simple. I’ll post some song lyrics to kick us off. The next poster will think of lyrics with one word in common with the lyrics I posted. So if I were to post:

Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh

The next poster might post:

As long as we’ve no place to go
Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow

Bold your common word. If I recall correctly OSC does not condone posting entire songs (seeing as how they are copyrighted and whatnot) but to my knowledge excerpts are acceptable. Let us know the artist and title. And finally, creativity is a plus. It’s lame to use words like “is” as your common word imho.

And to kick us off

Rufus Wainwright
"California"

Ain’t it a shame that at the top
Peanut butter and jam they served you
Ain’t it a shame that at the top
Still those soft skin boys can bruise you
Yes I fell for a streaker

Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Way-hey, you rolling river,
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

For seven years I courted Nancy,
Way-hey, you rolling river,
No other girl would suit my fancy.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

She would not have me for her lover,
Way-hey, you rolling river,
But I never courted any other.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

One day she went to Kansas City,
Way-hey, you rolling river,
And there she had a little baby.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

She must have had another lover,
Way-hey, you rolling river,
It must have been that cavalry soldier.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I love your daughter,
Way-hey, you rolling river,
Though she'll never cross your shining waters.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Way-hey, you rolling river,
Oh, Shenandoah, now I must leave you.
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.

Two that wanna stone me,

All the things she said
All the things she said
Running through my head
Running through my head
All the things she said
This is not enough.

I'm in serious shit.
I feel totally lost.
If I'm asking for help
it's only because
being with you
has opened my eyes.
Could I ever believe
such a perfect surprise?

Help, I need somebody,
Help, not just anybody,
Help, you know I need someone, help.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Help me if you can, I'm feeling down
And I do appreciate you being round.
Help me, get my feet back on the ground,
Won't you please, please help me.

A little light a-shinin' through the window, lets me know everything is alright.

I don’t care if Monday’s blue
Tuesday’s grey and Wednesday too
Thursday I don’t care about you
It’s Friday I’m in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn’t even start

I don't care if it rains or freezes,
'Long as I've got my plastic Jesus
Settin' on the dashboard of my car.
Comes in colors pink and pleasant,
Glows in the dark 'cause it's luminescent,
Take him with you when you travel far.

Plastic Jesus,
Plastic Jesus,
Settin' on the dashbord of my car,
I don't never feel alone,
And he gets me safely home,
Though I'm weavin' all across the tar.

When pedestrians try to cross,
I jest let 'em know who's boss,
I don't ever honk or give 'em warning.
Like to drive all over town
Tryin' for to run 'em down;
It's seldom that they live to see the morning.

Plastic Jesus,
Plastic Jesus,
Settin' on the dashboard of my car.
His halo fits just right
And I use it for a sight
To splatter all the spatter near and far.

A long time ago, yeah
Before you was born dude
When I was still single
And life was great
I held this job as a traveling salesman
That kept me moving from state to state

Well I’m standing on the corner of Lafayette
State of Louisiana
Wondering where a city boy could go
To get a little conversation
Drink a little red wine
Catch a little bit of those Cajun girls
Dancing to Zydeco

Along came a young girl
She’s pretty as a prayer book
Sweet as an apple on Christmas day
I said good gracious can this be my luck
If that’s my prayer book
Lord let us pray

Well I’m standing on the corner of Lafayette
State of Louisiana
Wondering what a city boy could do
To get her in a conversation
Drink a little red wine
Dance to the music of Clifton Chenier
The King of the Bayou

I caught my eye in a swinging door.
I'd never seen that man before.
I saw myself in someone else and hated them ever since.
Some broken glass and a bleeding hand.
The mirror's down but I'm still standing.
Stand.
I know who I am.

'cause I'm doing just fine hour to hour, note to note

Grey-haired and flint-eyed, his sunburned face lined,
Grandpa was a man of few words.
He had a way of not wanting to say
Any more than he thought would be heard.

The long years of living and day-to-day giving had carved out a map on his face;
With little to lose, he'd learned how to choose,
And his choices were easy to trace.

He had the eyes of a painter,
Heart of a maker of songs.
His words fell like rain on the dry desert plain,
Precious and so quickly gone.

Do you derive joy from diving in
And seeing that loving someone can actually feel like freedom?
Are you funny? à la self-deprecating?
Like adventure? and have many formed opinions?

These are 21 things that I want in a lover,
Not necessarily needs but qualities that I prefer.
I figure I can describe it since I have a choice in the matter.
These are 21 things I choose to choose in a lover.

watching, waiting, playing who's who
don't play to win to be second to you
the door will open when i suffer enough
who'll hold this hand when the going gets rough?
such good intentions always nipped in the bud
what'd you expect? well. you never could
if i stop laughing just to be at your door

always opinions turning you round
always opinions turning you down

I'm going back some day come what may
to Blue Bayou
Where the folks are fine
And the world is mine
On Blue Bayou
Where those fishing boats
With their sails afloat
If I could only see
That familiar sunrise
Through sleepy eyes
How happy I'd be

And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said "All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them"

But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you'll trust him
For he's touched your perfect body with his mind.

It's hard to escape from this fair lady's bower,
For high are the windows, and guarded the tower,
But there's always a way where there is a will,
And young Eileen is gone with Ned on the Hill

Who sings, "Lady love, come to me now,
Come and live merrily, under the bough.
And I'll pillow thy head where the fairies tread
If thou will but wed with Ned on the Hill."

-from "Ned on the Hill", trad.

It's too late for me to use my special google abilities, so please help me with this. [Hat]

The version I know is as sung by Kathryn Roberts and Kate Rusby on their self-titled album, which came out in 1999. [Smile] Connie Dover has a version in Gaelic (I think) on one of hers, too.

Oh, dear, what can I do?
Baby's in black and I'm feeling blue,
Tell me, oh, what can I do?

She thinks of him and so she dresses in black,
And though he'll never come back, she's dressed in black.
Oh, dear, what can I do?
Baby's in black and I'm feeling blue,
Tell me, oh, what can I do?

I think of her, but she thinks only of him,
And though it's only a whim, she thinks of him.
Oh, how long will it take,
Till she sees the mistake she has made?
Dear what can I do?
Baby's in black and I'm feeling blue,
Tell me, oh, what can I do?

Oh, how long it will take,
Till she sees the mistake she has made?
Dear what can I do?
Baby's in black and I'm feeling blue,

If language were liquid
It would be rushing in
Instead here we are
In a silence more eloquent
Than any word could ever be

Words are too solid
They don't move fast enough
To catch the blur in the brain
That flies by and is gone .

So I watch you wash your hair
Underwater, unaware
And the plane flies through the air
Did you think you didn't have to choose it
That I alone could win or lose it
In all the places we were hiding love
What was it we were thinking of?

In this house of make believe
Divided in two, like Adam and Eve
You put out and I recieve

Down by the railway siding
In our secret world, we were colliding
In all the places we were hiding love
What was it we were thinking of?

I put this
moment-- here.
I put this moment-- here.
I put this moment--

"Over here!
"Over here!
Can't you see where memories are kept bright?
Tripping on the water like a laughing girl.
Time in her eyes is spawning past life,
One with the ocean and the woman unfurled,
Holding all the love that waits for you here.
Catch us now for I am your future.
A kiss on the wind and we'll make the land.
Come over here to where When lingers,
Waiting in this empty world,
Waiting for Then, when the lifespray cools.
For Now does ride in on the curl of the wave,
And you will dance with me in the sunlit pools.
We are of the going water and the gone.
We are of water in the holy land of water
And all that's to come runs in
With the thrust on the strand."

Your love is better than wine
But wine is all I have
Will your love ever be mine?

-Stephen Tin Tin Duffy, Kiss Me (Amazing how the lyrics come back after not hearing them for a decade and a half)

Don't forget a small moonbeam,
Fold in lightly with a dream,
Your lips, and mine,
Two sips of wine,
Memories are made of this...

If we hold on together
I know our dreams will never die
Dreams see us through to forever
Where clouds roll by
For you and I

When we are out there in the dark
We'll dream about the sun
In the dark we'll feel the light
Warm our hearts, everyone

Diana Ross, If We Hold On Together (from The Land Before Time Soundtrack)

Picture yourself in a boat on a river,
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly,
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green,
Towering over your head.
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes,
And she’s gone.

The captain is a one-armed dwarf,
he's throwing dice along the wharf
In the land of the blind
the one-eyed man is king, so take this ring

We sail tonight for Singapore,
we're all as mad as hatters here
I've fallen for a tawny Moor,
took off to the land of Nod
Drank with all the Chinamen,
walked the sewers of Paris
I drank along a colored wind,
I dangled from a rope of sand
You must say goodbye to me

--Tom Waits, "Singapore"

I played the part of a broken heart upon a shelf
I played that part so lonely and so well
Thought that love belonged to someone else not me and you
Yeah, I know that you've been shattered, you've been bruised
We both know what it feels like when you lose
But I'd bet my life on the roll of the dice for you

If that's what it takes, that's what I'd do
Tonight 's the night, I'm gonna prove it to you
Do I have to break down, baby just to break through
If that's what it takes, that's what I'd do
If that's what it takes...

- Bon Jovi, If that's what it takes
