I use both "stoopid" and "stupid" but they both have different meanings. "Stoopid" is reserved for only the most basically ignorant of situations or occurances; I use it about once a year, perhaps less. "Stupid" is for normal situations, although thinking about it I don't use "styupid" all that often, either.

Now, 'Library' I do pronounce correctly, because I always used to spell it wrong (as "liberry" ) so I started to pronounce it correctly so I would spell it correctly .

Or Weden's Day, which is how I pronounce it. But it's from Woden's Day, so my way is closer to the original, if not the present spelling.

ps. That italicised my was not intended to look (or sound) snitty, but since it does I rather like the tongue-in-cheekness of it so I've decided to leave it.

Oh yeah? Well I say thrid and brid and thourgh instead of third and bird and through. It's closer to the original, so that makes it better, right?

Screw nucular and nuclear, both of them. The proper word, as any child of the 50s would know, is "atomic."

My fifth grade social studies teacher (who later became my sixth grade science teacher) said nucular...and cholestriol. Made me squirm in my seat even then.

just reading the TITLE of this thread makes me twitch. I will probably burst a blood vessel yelling at the tv... It's bad enough that the PRESIDENT can't (or won't) pronounce it correctly, but Monday night on 24 they did the same thing! My husband has gotten used to me screaming NEW-CLEE-UR!!! when I hear the *other* pronunciation.
Anyone ever see that espidode of the Simpsons where Homer corrects Lisa? "No, honey, it's Noo-cue-lur..."

Oh man, I totally forgot. I was in a hillbilly wedding over the weekend. The groom couldn't say "poverty." So he'll be keeping his bride in "proverty" or wealth. Whatever that is...

You do realize it's on purpose, right? For one thing, Cheney pronounces nuclear correctly. For another, the President's surrounded by image consultants. Someone, somewhere, has decided that it makes him sound like an "Average Joe." In fact, I bet it is seen as good because it plays to his base and infuriates his opposition, which further solidifies his base. And the gamble is whether it bothers those in the middle ground. They've played a number of those gambles relatively successfully, as evidenced by the portrait on the wall at the post office.
