While my wife and I didn't meet over a 20 sided dice, we did meet because her then boyfriend and I played D&D. He refused to teach her the game. I didn't refuse.
We played for many years, and though I swore never to show her any favoritism, I don't think I ever killed her character except this once, when I accidently....
Never mind. Some things are too painful to remember.
Anyway, Friday I was cleaning up some some old files I had kept in a box since college days. One of the file folders was full of D&D Characters we had created.
(Does anyone else keep their old characters? I claim I keep them for book ideas or if my children ever play, but the truth is destroying a character sheet feels too much like murder)
I was looking it over and saw the name:
SASHA
(For those of you who don't know, last year we adopted a son from Russia. His name is Sasha. We didn't give him that name.)
Wow, what a coincidence.
It was a character my wife created, but she didn't last long.
Yeah, Sasha D&D was a She.
That is not the worst part.
D&D Sasha was a Chaotic Neutral Thief who loved to cause trouble and get into things she shouldn't.
That sounds so like our son that I am getting worried. Maybe those Chick Tracts were right.

As far a Jack Chick goes... well... I never played D&D with hot young lesbians that know real magic. Nor do I know anybody who did.
Sasha is frequently mistaken for a female name in English, I've found. Obviously too many people didn't pay close enough attention to "Peter and the Wolf" in their childhood.

We have embraced the evil. We are playing a campaign with our 6 year old son!
I'm glad, because I was getting tired of creating D&D characters for games that never "got off the ground". This is my first time playing since I was a teen and my DM was my older brother.
We played our first adventure last week! It was a blast.

My wife and I play and I've been a gamer geek for about 25 years or so now. Way too late to give up now.
Besides, I'm just waiting for when I can put my daughter on the miniatures board and proclaim "And then the titan jumps out at ya!!"
(The rule around the house is No D and D for the baby until she can read her own character sheet.)
But after this week's game, my wife did ask me why she wasn't getting any magic items as good as the other characters since I started GMing. Man, I think I've tried too hard to not show favoritism.

How would one get started in playing D&D? I don't have any friends or anyone I know that knows how to play. And I don't know the rules or barely anything about the game. But it really sounds like something I'd enjoy alot. Help?

If playing D&D was wrong, I don't want to be right! I loved the game and still do (40 yrs old btw). I have my 13 year old into it as well. Yes, I did the geek thing, but I did the jock thing as well (baseball and soccer).

Trouble with D&D for new inductees is that it takes so long to make a character. And then to understand what's going on. For a new player, you have to have an excellent DM and a very patient set of co-players.

Sorry to hear that. I would find that very frustrating--like a book series that I love that may never be finished.

Mitya from Dmitry sounds right to me because the accent in Dmitry is on the mit part. Like Lizzy from Elizabeth, maybe. I love Russian names, too. Check out this site for Russian nomenclature.

D&D is surprisingly still popular among younger generations... I just got into it in June, and I think it's awesome. However, it's also considered a geek label. So I'm out of the closet. ^_^

Well, OK, but you missed the point. If I ran across somebody named "Vondella" I would assume it was a she for the same reason that I would assume "Sasha" was a she if I didn't know better: it's a convention of contemporary English, that names that end in -a are female names.
