So, the yankees are one up on the sox, the sox are one up on the indians.

The yankees have clinched the american league East, because they have the series lead against the red sox, and there will not be a three way tie.

The red sox have clinched playing through at LEAST monday.

The indians must win, and the sox must lose, for the indians to keep playing after tomorrow.

Possible scenarios left:

Red sox win
Indians Win or lose

Yankees are division winners, red sox are wild card, cleveland goes home

Yankees win
Indians win

Yankees win division, Red sox and indians one game playoff at fenway

Yankees win
Indians lose

Yankees win division, red sox are wild card

Red Sox just clinched the wild card spot! Go SOX! And we're up 10-1 on the yankees. The Angels have home advantage against the yankees as well. This is a good day in baseball.

Glad the Red Sox got the Wild Card [Smile] , though it would've been fun to see a playoff between them and Cleveland. (Ditto the Astros and the Phillies.)

Anyway, so it's

Yankees-Angels
Red Sox-White Sox
Padres-Cardinals
Astros-Atlanta

Any guesses/predictions? I think the Yankees will win, and the Red Sox and the White Sox are about even, and that if the Yankees and Red Sox get to the next level that it's a toss up between either of them.

I don't know the National League at all, though I can't believe the Padres got to the playoffs with a record only 2 games over .500, so I'm kinda hoping that they'll get knocked out right away. (On the other hand, it would be pretty funny if they somehow survive and even win the World Series...)

Red sox should smash the white sox. The white sox just really aren't a very good team. They had a few pitchers have career years... for 4 months... and then trended back towards the mean. The only actual good hitter in that lineup is Konerko. Small ball is fine... but doesn't work against a team that will score 5 runs a game without breaking a sweat, and over the last 6 weeks, the chicago pitching staff has pitched as we'd expect them to pitch... slightly better then the average american league pitcher.

The red sox, on the other hand, got into the playoffs doing what they did all year. Scoring lots of runs, giving up some runs. Their starting pitching isn't great, but chicago doesn't have the offense to take advantage (especially since they are a very impatient offensive team. The way to beat boston is to take the first 4 pitches in every at bat unless you get something to smoke).

Basically, the red sox have a better run differential, and a SIGNIFICANTLY better run differential over the last 6 weeks. There's no reason to suspect the chicago staff will revert to june form, since june form was abnormal for them, and september form was right in line with expectations.

Boston in 4.
