I'm online for the first time in a week and there is so much I want to share about Christmas.
1. A Gathering on Friday. MattB and I joined Jon Boy, Brinestone, beverly, porter, pooka, and human 2.0 at the Orignal Pancake House for breakfast Friday morning. The food was wonderful and the company even better. I can't remember human's real name - James, right? He was quiet, but looked happy. It was fun to pause the conversation to say "Let's ask the human what he thinks!" Thank you, everyone - that was great.
2. I owe a tremendous apology to Dr. Rabbit. I didn't copy down her number before I left, and I wasn't online the entire vacation. Christmas Eve, at 11:30, the family parties are all over and I'm back at my grandparents house where I will spend the night, and I realized that I hadn't called Dr. Rabbit yet about Midnight Mass. We found her number, but much too late to get to Mass on time. I'm so sorry. Thank you for the invitation. It was very sweet.
3. The family Christmases were wonderful. Matt's family was incredibly sweet to me. While my immediate family did hold the big dinner with all the siblings the night before I came (what on earth?!), we concluded it was because they were clueless. Matt thinks my dad is an emotional King Kong - good intentions, but he keeps knocking me down and flipping me around and doesn't understand that it can hurt. The rest certainly made up for it - my dad gave me the most thoughtful present (black cashmere sweater and lavender pearl earrings, necklace, and bracelet) and was eager to see me when they could. Matt and I went over on Monday night to squash my dad, stepmom, baby brother, and his girlfriend in Trivial Pursuit. It sort of worked - we won the first game by a landslide and lost the second by a whisker.
I don't think my dad quite knows what to do with Matt. He was with me the whole time, and I'm not sure they talked twice outside the opening greetings.
"Hello, Matt." *cheerily* "Hallo!" His existence has been aknowledged.
4. Best. Present. Ever. Matt got me a signed copy of To Kill a Mockingbird. I'm beyond words delighted. Thank you, Matt.

Yeah, I'm James. Not much to say to a room full of strangers...
(that was only my second gathering with people I originally met online... and the first gathering was much less intimidating as it was only one person and someone I had worked with closely for a year and had video chatted etc.. but even that was hard because the occasion we finallly met in person was to attend a conference and pretty much we were the only 2 we even knew there too...)

But that isn't saying I didn't enjoy it. I'm glad to have met all of you and I hope to be able to come to more stuff! Then I wont be such a stranger and I'll probably speak more!

Yeah, no one is posting in this thread, except the always darling Noemon. That's okay - there isn't a lot of discussion fodder here. Oh, hey, I forgot to announce it! I'm real now as 7 other hatrackers have seen me in person! (and knew it was me--I was at Endercon and some OSC lectures too, but those didn't count)

Tropical, yes. Paradise, have you read about the corruption, large lizards and other beasties, violence and scariness, and worst of all, unavailability of many of my favorite foods and crappiness of local restaurants, which is not entirely made up for by the wonderfulness of her mother-in-law's cooking and the availability of many curries?

Bob the Lawyer, check out the January National Geographic Zip Usa article on Monroeville, Alabama for more on Harper Lee -- not much but what's there is interesting. Apparently she is alive and well and has ZERO interest in being in the public eye.
