I knew about Icarus and the Central-Floridians, but I didn't know you were in Daytona, Strangelove. I'm in Jacksonville and I thought the closest ones were in Orlando.
Only an hour and a half, wow, we're practically neighbors.

Not too far from you Alcon. I'm over in Malta, NY right now. About 9 miles south of Saratoga Springs.

But now I'm confused because Jhai's saying he lives in Indiana...
I go to college in Indiana - but I'll always be a California girl
You live just off San Tomas and El Camino? That's not far at all from my home - just off 280 between the Wolfe and DeAnza exits. Next time I'm home we should consider a get together, with, uh, esl.

Thank you! It's very nice here. Not as nice as Seattle, but that's true for pretty much the entire world. *homesick for PACNW, not home*

Jhai, oooh, I'm so sorry! I can't help but demonstrate just how much of a newbie I am.
The marker's a little off, but I'm near there. I'm right next to the university, actually.
And esl, I don't know Burlingame well, but I got lost there once on my way to a friend's house if that counts for anything.

You know, I should really make my way up to Chicago some weekend, both to hang out with interested people from the Chicago clump and to go to the art museum again. Or the Field Museum; been a few years since I've been to that one.

I know there are a few other Hatrackers in Hawaii (jennabean and Zotto, maybe others) but I think I'm the only one on Maui. So we're *close* but might as well be thousands of miles away without wings or flippers.

So there isn't a lot of traffic between the islands? That's interesting.
On a tangent, I applied for a job at Pearl Harbor a month or so ago, but my appliation disappeared into the ether unacknowledged. I suspect that every Domino Administrator in existence probably applied for that one.

Yay! Party in Chicago! I love both those museums and I seldom get to them unless I have out of town visitors.
Warning: Anybody here on a Sunday evening will be cajoled into going to the pub (n drinking required) where I sing.

Going to the pub sounds like fun, but unless I have a 3 day weekend it'll have to be a Friday or Saturday activity, which would mean not having the opportunity to hear you perform. What kind of stuff do you sing?

The planes fly 10-12 times a day, but it's gotten pretty expensive (~$130 RT if you buy tickets a week ahead), and a real pain with all the airport security and that. I go to Honolulu about 6-8 times a year for work, and I usually try to work in a weekend visit on those trips, but can't always make it happen. (For example, I'm gonna be over there for the 16th and 17th, but the Maui Interscholastic League wrestling championship is on the 18th, so I have to come home to watch my girl compete.)
My Sweet Baboo lives in Honolulu and he flies over here once a month or so, but it's getting harder financially to do so.

Almost afraid to say after the folk music thread, but I sing folk music. Mostly Irish, but some American, Scottish, and English as well.

That's really unfortunate. I'd just assumed that there was some kind of barge service that would transport people between the islands. I guess they're probably too far apart for that to be practical, eh?

Not even that organized. It's an Irish sessiun (session). It's a couple of core people and whoever else shows up. They do tunes and from time to time I'll sing. Sometimes a capella, often the musicians know the stuff I do well enough that they will accompany me.
There are a couple on Sunday afternoons too. If you play anything, bring your instrument.

Yes. There are passenger ferries between Maui and Lanai/Molokai, but they're not cheap either (~$50 RT per person) and only run 3-4 times a day. Then, if you don't know anyone on the other island, you'll have to rent a car, because there's no public transportation.
If you go to Oahu, you can probably get by without renting a car, as there's a decent bus line, and plenty taxis. I'm fortunate that I have a contact in Honolulu, so I never rent a car unless I need one for my work responsiblities and then I don't have to pay for it myself.
Just in the five years I've lived here it's gotten much harder to travel inter-island. Fortunately, I like living on Maui and don't feel a great need to get off very often, and with my work travel, I get over to Honolulu often enough to do whatever shopping I need to do there.

What kind of shopping are you unable to do on Maui (I'm finding this fascinating, by the way; I've wondered for some time what life was like on the different islands)?

Shopping is quite limited here, compared with Honolulu. There is only one very small, poorly stocked craft store, for instance. I buy most of my yarn and other craft supplies online (which can be a problem with shipping) or in Honolulu. I *can* buy clothing, shoes, accessories, etc here, but there is a better selection and better prices over there.
Home decor things are hard to come by here. I've had to sew most of my curtains, for example. That is getting better now that KMart is merged with Sears.
Oddly enough, food supplies are not too dependable here, either. (Unless you count rice, papayas, bananas, pineapple and Spam... you can ALWAYS buy those ) The Safeway here routinely runs out of milk, sour cream, yogurt, Frank's Red Hot Sauce (which can create a MAJOR crisis in my house, let me tell you) and other odd things. I've learned that when the store does have the products I like in stock (not milk, obviously, but non perishables) I buy as many as I can afford (or if there's a limit, etc).
I buy most of my groceries from Safeway or Costco, and I like to go to farmer's markets, but those are getting harder to find, too. There used to be one around the corner from my office that I'd hit a couple of times a week, but they're gone now.

And maui babe, I'm from Oahu and I go back twice a year or so. In fact, I'll be back at the end of March.
I haven't been to Maui recently. The only outer island I travel to on a regular basis is the Big Island. My relatives live in Hilo.

Hey JennaDean! I'm actually even a bit further north than Daytona. DeLeon Springs might not mean anything to you, but if it does, thats me. DeLand, which again may mean absolutely nothing to you, but is definately bigger than DeLeon Springs, is about 10 minutes south.
And yeah, Icarus, unfortunately I'm only 17. I don't look 17 or act 17, but the fact of the matter is, however much I try to deny it, I am 17. That's why I haven't posted at all in the Central Florida planning thread. If there's ever anything that ya'll would feel comfortable with me showing up for, let me know (I check my email everyday. Linky in the profile). Otherwise, I'll just have to wait til July when I turn 18 to become real. Oh well.

Hey Juxtapose, I know! I believe we have more friends in common than just the one. Well, I don't know if you were actually friends with them, but you must've known each other. I'm an old Key Clubber.
As for the boredom thing, it gets that way eventually, so I usually only stay for a few days.

Yeah, I'd say anywhere in Brookfield would be within about a half hour of me... as short as fifteen minutes for the southernmost area. That also makes you super close to my sister, who posts occasionally as peekaboo.

Brookfield's also reasonably close to me in suburban Chicago. And I have to say that I did a massive doubletake when I saw Jeni's last post because I hadn't looked at this thread previously... I grew up in Brookfield IL. For a minute I thought I might have possibly had a Hatrack neighbor!
