You know, I've never actually seen Shaft, or any of his other movies. I can vouch for The Learning Tree as a powerful novel, though, and his photography is great.
Hmm. May be time for a reread of The Learning Tree, I'm thinking; it's probably been a decade since I've read it.

I didn't know anything about him before reading that article, but he sounds like a remarkable person. I'll have to look up his work - I'm amazed at its variety!
And that is sad that this probably won't get much attention. He sounds like he deserves it.

For me he's right up there with Pres. Carter in terms of people I respect and admire. It isn't terribly well written, but here is an older article that talks about his accomplishments.
