I was reading an article about a man who killed his wife and four of her children ( ) and noticed that it stated that he "appeared at a bond hearing via video link" from the county jail. This was in South Carolina.
I'm pretty sure that's not standard procedure. So why would they have him appear via video link? Would that be for his own protection if they thought someone might try to harm him as he was transported, or to keep him under control if they thought he'd make trouble if they took him to court, or because he was ill, or might there be other reasons? I'm just kind of curious as to why it would be done.

Almost all prisoners here appear for their first appearance via video link from the jail. Saves in transport costs, etc., and is safer...
