My brothers and I are making a CD for my mother. During the summer, my aunt made a CD filled with happy songs, and gave it to my mom. She plays it whenever someone is grouchy or sad. It annoys my brothers though. One of them said he would make an unhappy CD and blast it all the time- he never did. So for her birthday (which is today) I'm making an unhappy CD for her with my brothers. Any suggestions?

When I was young I never needed anyone/And makin' love was just for fun/Those days are gone (All By Myself)

Shannon Is Gone

No One Ever Is To Blame

One Is the Loneliest Number

lots of stuff by Dan Fogelberg (Why Must I Be Lonely In Love?, anything on The Innocent Age or Windows and Walls)

Gloomy Sunday, Billie Holiday or Sarah McLachlan version. A song which was apparently responsible for many suicides. Too depressing? Interesting article about the song's history in wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloomy_Sunday

If you want some really depressing music, check out a Canadian musician named Hayden. Especially his first couple albums.

And what's with listening to happy music when sad? The best cure for depression is depressing music.

Big Yellow Taxi is pretty sad.

Elton John's Sad Songs would be ironic.

By the Time I Get to Phoenix is pretty mournful.

Me and Emily always makes me cry.

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. The Johnny Cash version is good too.

The Ballad of Penny Evans by Steve Goodman.

Samuel Barber's Adagio.

That one aria from Madama Butterfly that I never remember the name of. Maria Callas can sing that song so darn well.

Watching him play this on his MTV Unplugged was probably the only time I've teared up watching something on that channel.

Jeesh, you could always go with the numerous, NUMEROUS emo standbys. Death Cab, Bright Eyes, Sunny Day Real Estate, Cursive, etc. Just make sure you pick ones that don't hit too close to home (playing any of Death Cab for Cutie's songs off Transatlanticism when someone has recently had an unsuccessful long distance relationship, for example, is pretty cruel).

Also...

Just Like Heaven - The Cure
Motorcycle Drive By - Third Eye Blind
You & I Both (Live @ Java Joe's version) - Jason Mraz
Brick - Ben Folds
Volcano - Damien Rice

See, these are all GREAT songs that might be sad or nostalgic or incredibly moving.

None of them, though, strike me as "depressing." They all have the opposite effect, in fact. I always feel better after a great "sad" song like "Mad World" or Barber's Adagio.

Turn on popular radio hits. THAT'S depressng. The only music that actually drains me or depresses me is BAD music.

*And on a side note, I didn't realize how many great songs I didn't know were written by this leonard cohen guy. Thanks for introducing him*

Hank Williams:

"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"
"A House Without Love"

You know what, I'm not going to list them all... Check out anything by Hank and 3/4 of the songs are depressing.

"You're Not Standing Like You Used To" and "An Unfinished Life" by Kate Wolf.

Half of Dido's stuff.

Gosh, there are so many, I can't list them all...

I was just coming on to say the same thing. The Gary Jules version is infinitely sadder.

I also agree though, with Launchywiggin that listening to a sad song makes them feel better. They have the same affect on me too.

Actually, it's the last verse that gets me, and I don't know why, since it's not inherently sad. But I sob every time.

You know, "The Wind Blows Wild" is the one she recorded from her hospital bed, and it's much more positive.
