There's an a capella group practicing in the Atrium of the science building right now. I don't know why maybe the music building just ran out of room. They're pretty good, and it's kinda nice. But at the same time, there's a reason we have a music building and practice rooms. Noise in the atrium of the science building can be heard all over the science building. There are no doubt people working in the various labs who are extremely peeved. I myself run a tutoring session for physics students on the first floor of the atrium. I don't have any students right now, but I still have to admit I'm sorta annoyed just on principle. There's a reason there are practice rooms and it'd be nice if they... you know, used them. On the other hand, random free decent music is always nice...

I'm torn :/

Ever run into something like this? Where you really couldn't decide whether you were annoyed or amused and pleased at something someone or some group of people were doing?

I have some neighbors who like to play ukuleles and guitars and sing in their yard well into the night. They're actually quite good, and most of the time I enjoy listening to live music. But I'm an early riser and even pleasant music can make it difficult to go to sleep.

I just try to remind myself that the previous tenants in that house used to be up all night screaming obscenities at each other and their children and relax and enjoy the music.

So yeah, annoyed and pleased pretty much covers it.

Of course, I have neighbors on the OTHER side who also like to play music loudly, except they suck, so that puts it in perspective too.

Maybe they needed better acoustics to hear themselves? "Atrium" sounds acoustically promising to me...

If the atrium of the science center has better acoustics than the practice rooms in the music building, the music building needs to be burned to the ground.

Well, that's probably true, but I've known schools where that was the case. Sadly.

Yeah, I have to concur with kqueen. Practice room acoustics are usually pretty awful.

Are they rehearsing for a performance that will be given in the atrium? Maybe they are trying to get a feel for the performance space.

Sounds like free entertainment to me. I wish there were more high-quality musicians randomly performing around here.

Yeah, but even free high quality entertainment can be really annoying when one is trying to concentrate on work or study.

When I went to UF I used to love it when random people would sit outside in one of the plazas and play the guitar.

It was much preferable to the times when those campus preachers would come out and tell us that we were all fornicators and were going to burn.

Of course if I was trying to study in the area it would prob annoy me. As it was, I was late to class a couple of times because of listening to performers. [Smile]

Singing groups can often, in my experience, be under the delusion that because they find their art entertaining and delightful that everyone else will too.

They will visit:
Subway stations
Parks
Tunnels
Atria, of course
Sidewalks

I've seen them sing their way through grocery stores.

I'm sure sometimes they like visiting a place with a lot of reverb so they can hear themselves in a different way.

Other times I think they are just screwing around.

All in all I think it's better than groups of kids that start fights, congregate to smoke & drink in parking lots, cruise around in cars honking and hooting, or throw stuff at stuff for their entertainment, but I think sometimes it's a manifestation of the same energy.

[Smile]

I'd generally rather listen to a good live performance than the insipid elevator music often piped into stores, subway stations, etc.

Hey Lupus, I go to FSU! We must now hate each other [Smile] . (I actually never got into the whole rivalry thing. Frankly, the only reason I chose FSU over UF is I like garnet and lot better then either orange or blue.)

I'll agree that music, especially good music, would be better than street preachers (we had one yesterday who called me a fornicator because I wouldn't raise my hand when he asked for all guy Christians to raise their hands. Funny thing is that I've a devout Christian - I wonder if it occurs to him people just don't want to be associated with him).
However, I know that almost, if not all of my history professors would leave the classroom and tell them to shut up or get out. And I'm inclined to say I would agree with them. For me anyways, music is usually distracting. In most cases I'd say that's a good thing, but in a classroom I'd imagine teachers don't want their students to be distracted.

Noles don't have to hate Gators. They have to hate Canes. The flip side is that Gators don't have to hate Noles; they hate Bulldogs. Get with the rivalries. [Wink]

They might have been kicked out of a lot of practice rooms by instrumentalists (Namely, pianists)
