I was less than impressed by the trailer. It looked kind of cool for 20 seconds, but went pretty steadily downhill after that.

Well...it -was- kinda cool when the authorities freaked out about Klaatu's power level being over 9,000.

Clearly the answer then is to not allow a buck to be made. The Day the Earth Stood Still is one of those movies that should not under any circumstances be remade. It's a perfect classic that cannot be improved upon and its message is unharmed by it's campy old special effects.
We are not pleased...

Keanu spilled the beans: The new film is replacing the old film's pro-peace message with something else. (He seemed to hint that it's now a go-green message)

I agree completely, but the people who call shots like these aren't movie lovers like you and me. They're business men/women. For execs, when profit is on the line, aesthetics, culture, and timelessness takes the proverbial backseat.
Remakes and sequels are a cornerstone of modern movie business. S.Darko? Dark Crystal 2? Let's make Citizen Kane more modern. This is not going to stop anytime soon.
All we can do is cringe at the announcements and hope that someone in their ranks has a shred of common sense or at least some decency and respect for good movies.

I was all ready to simply not want to watch this movie, and then I saw the trailer. Other than they should have found a different actor to play the lead, I have become interested.
I like the original movie. However, I always thought it showed its age way too clearly. This movie might still be not that good, but compared to the Sci-Fi that is currently getting made (is there any that doesn't have a comic book character?) this is refreshing.
