Anyone know how I can do this without paying massive sums of monies?

Basically I have a HD, appears to have some bad sectors and doesn't let me access it (gives an I/O error), although i can see all of the top level folders within it.

Being able to see the top level folders just tells you that the directory information is there; the actual data is stored elsewhere on the HD.

I'd suggest giving the Restorer 2000 demo a whirl, and seeing whether it's likely to dredge up enough data to make it worth the $29.99.

(Needless to say, you'll need another drive to put any recovered data onto.)
