HBO's 'The Wire'
Showtime's 'Dexter'
These are just the beginning of my list. Can anyone think of other omissions?

Come on, OSC, if you're going to say you review "everything," I expect a thought-provoking and detailed review of literally everything that has ever existed in the universe. Otherwise, that's just false advertising.

I suppose he could give up his family life, his writing, and all other non-TV-show watching aspects of life...

Oh, that Patton...

It's too bad it doesn't exist quite the way he described it. I wonder how many hits the IMDb page got when that special first aired.

Maybe he has reviewed you but didn't publish it because he thought it was too mean.

Alright, I understand your sarcasm. I understand that what he means to say is OSC Reviews Everything (that he watches). I'm just suggesting that he watch The Wire. . . In a roundabout way.

I can't imagine OSC watching HBO or Showtime. Or subscribing to them. But maybe that's just me.

He's a fool then, if he thinks the "intellectual elite" programs HBO.

Everyone should watch The Wire. It's the greatest tv show of all time.

Or maybe there's a completely different reason?

I don't pay for premium cable channels because any of the shows I -really- want to watch will be out on DVD soon for far less than the price that would be added to my cable bill each month. I'm not saying that's OSC's reason, but to assume a negative reason seems unfair.

No, it means that he reviews whatever he feels like.

If he reviewed everything he watches, it'd be called "OSC Reviews TV and movies." If he reviewed everything he reads, it'd be "OSC Reviews Books." If he reviewed everything he listens to, it'd be called "OSC Reviews Music."

But sometimes he feels like reviewing small restaurants in Topeka, or web services, or frozen peas, or toilet paper, or audio engineers for books on tape, or dish racks, or the decisions of local government. So he calls it "OSC Reviews Everything."

I guess you could argue that a better title would be "OSC Reviews Anything."

The point is, the column isn't the backbone of his career. It's a bit of fun. He isn't obligated to review everything he comes across, and he isn't obligated to seek out the most culturally relevant things to make the column appeal to as many people as possible. It's just a place to put down his random thoughts, and he wanted to make it as unrestricted as possible, so he gave himself permission in the title to review whatever he feels like.

Or, at least, that's how I understand it.

I was thinking more along the lines of the objectionable content of many of the programs. I may be off-base. It's been a really long time since I've seen either of those channels, but do they still show soft-core porn during late night? That's the impression I have of them, based on watching them in shocked fascination with a bunch of other eighth-graders during our class trip to Disney World.

I was temped to be snotty and say, "why not, he always does." But yeah, maybe you're right. He may just be one of those people that hasn't been turned on to HBO yet, or for some other reason dislikes the programs or the network, or doesn't receive it. But really, he's a writer who's a wannabe (not in the derogatory sense) screenwriter and film maker, and he doesn't watch HBO? It's hard to argue from the position that HBO is not worthwhile in general when he reviews some pretty banal and mediocre material he has time to at least watch once.

I recall the flippant answer he gave once about Douglas Adams, basically saying that Adams was too in love with his own writing to be enjoyable, and he hadn't attempted to read any of (imo) Adams' best works, just his most noted one- and that he hadn't finished. I get a sense in OSC's criticism that he forms a snap judgment when he feels an inkling of "elitism" or inauthenticity of any kind; even when, in all fairness, he simply might have needed time to appreciate a British sense of humor, or just Adams' particular sense of humor.

I'll admit too, that having now read a lot of OSC, going back to Adams sometimes feels like getting on a bus with a drunk driver after getting off a train. OSC moves in straight lines, and Adams doesn't.

Going back to the original post, I would love to hear OSC's opinion of "Dexter" especially since its seems to have rediscovered itself after the train-wreck that was season two. But I know after the first sex scene, the whole review would be shot.

Personally, I feel horribly confused by my excitement for a new book in November from an author who watches "American Idol" and doesn't like Douglas Adams.
