I'm writing a story where one of my characters (a female character) has a non-fatal degenerate disease, but lacking medical knowledge since I haven't seen House since the last season ended not sure which ones to look up, I'm thinking severe tuberculosis the symptoms I'm looking for are:

-severe near-paralyzing cough or a "wracking"(?proper adjective?) cough.
-chronic fatigue.
-short endurance though this could be a side effect of lack of energetic activity due to the above.
-frequent fevers can be coupled with hallucinations at their "worst".
-lack of/suppressed appetite.
-if there's anything that can increase metabolism so whatever food consumed doesn't really help sustain her.
-maybe throw in asthma?

Or some close combination thereof that keeps the character bedridden but allows for lucid periods where the character can be and is capable of intense thought, critical thinking and studying. My main concern is having the above and have it non-fatal but persistent as to not be "easily" curable with modern medicine but maybe with medicine make it more tolerable.

Suggestions?

edit: preferably non contagious.

No. Do you have any idea for the illness in question could be or not?

The first thing I noticed was "yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin" and considering the conversation thus far makes me smile.

Where's the link for the autoimmune version?

Hrrm is the autoimmune version simply onsets faster and is harder to treat?

Isn't that the one that only effects people of Jewish heritage or am I thinking of the wrong one? The characters in question are Japanese.

*quick google search*
Oh yeah I'm definitely thinking of the wrong one.

Unless I'm reading wrong EBV isn't chronic or severe enough for the characterization I'm searching for, though that Jux suggested is a pretty good candidate.
