(I'm actually not sure if that's a cool thing to say or not-that is, whether it's taken as prejudiced. I've never used the term myself, or even heard it used. Huh. Now that I type this, I'm wondering if it's considered neutral or offensive.)

Offensiveness aside, it is still a very strange label to try and give to rivka. While she is indeed Jewish and American, absolutely none of the other attributes of that stereotype apply to her in any way.

"How shall I get even worse?" Said the bad thread. "Perhaps I should focus on being more potentially uncomfortable. But how do I top where I've already gone?"

0_0 I had no idea, I'm so sorry. I never seen it used here in any way other than affectionatly.

"affectionately" (and to clarify, that is a comment on specifically who finds that sort of name for a minority affectionate rather than on spelling)

I can hypothetically imagine it being used that way between people who know each other extremely well (in the same way that practically any derogatory phrase can become affectionate in the right setting) but people who talk to on the internet fall a bit outside the required familiarity zone.

If you are trying to get Rivka's attention, your timing could be better.

You mean like N-word privileges?
I guess my local club was filled with strange people. C'est la vie.

It's say it's a little more along the creepy, uncomfortable, overly familiar line (rather than offensive). Like if I started calling you sweetheart or darling.

No kidding.
I find this thread creepy and I'm sorry it's going to be one of the first things rivka sees when she returns Sunday.

I am from Quebec. Overly creepy and familiar is like half of our phrases.

That's why they're called French Canadians.
Hey now. Them's fightin' words.
We WILL take away all the syrup. ALL of it. Then how will you eat your pancakes? Huh? Tell me that, HOW will you eat them?

If I were the creator of this thread, I would delete it. I don't see how this is going to end without insulting my friend Rivka.

I think the original thread creation was fine. Maybe it could have done without the "does she fancy me?" thing. However, judging by the quoted text where rivka seems to be playfully insulting jebus, I don't think its out of the scope of their established banter.
The thread did get a bit weird though, I admit.

If rivka mistakes this as being anything other than gentle ribbing over an amusing trend I noticed, I'll certainly delete it.
Until then should I offer you some advice on what I would do if I were you or should we just take it as a given?

Though I think I will change the title of the thread. I didn't mean to throw myself in with the lonely loopies.

I dispute that four times in the past two years equates to "all the time". Or that it even represents a trend.

Well observed, manji, thank you for taking this issue seriously. Of course, any more often and it would be a bit too obvious, don't you think? No one said rivka wasn't clever.

And we can consider you an authority on uncomfortable situations, since I seem to recall your penchant for asking girls flat out if they plan to have sex with you or not early into dates with them.

To be fair, Dobbie, there is substantial evidence that suggests Vermont is really a Canadian sleeper province inserted into the American northeast.

Oh, you mean from, say, here?

You're right! That is pretty silly! Now, you can show me where I've said that you start things off by asking that kind of question, and that will make it at all relevant to my proposals.
Please keep working on conveniently parsed recollections in an effort to make your creepy bad thread creepier and worse!

There's a reason Vermont is shaped like a shiv.

Eh, it seems like a bunch of silly goofing off to me, with the exception of Blayne's fox pass, which he actually gave a prompt, sincere apology for.
Is there something more insulting that I'm missing?

Nothing is intrinsically creepy or insulting. I just think, at least in its original form, the thread would have come off as unpleasant at least in some degree to rivka. I got that vibe pretty strongly. *shrug* I feel pretty sure about that, though I could be wrong. I also think, with less certainty, that that was known to jebus in the beginning, that the possibility was there, since he's been a member for a very long time, but even moreso here I could be wrong.
The important thing is, jebus is always the coolest, most aloof and witty participant in a thread. We know because he tells us!

Rivka's response to the thread in all probability: 'lol whatever,' stone wolf pulled out, blayne legit meant nothing by it, so no big.
So I guess to up the ante, jebus decided to bring up allegations about my dating life in really bad taste as a way to try to take a shot at me, just to make sure the thread had that special something.Posts: 15421 | Registered: Aug 2005

I don't know what that was about. I don't know if you two even know each other, or how he knew or thought he knew about your dating life.
