Since '93: four short stories published in literary magazines, two dozen or so non-fiction articles, and a biography from Scarecrow Press.

While copywriting may not qualify as "being published," it does require many of the same skills. I've been doing copywriting and editing for 29 years. I feel like the copywriting skills I have honed over the years have given me a big advantage.
Along that same vein, it amazes me how many college educated upper executives couldn't write their way out of a paper bag. Without secretaries to correct their grammar and spelling, they'd seem like a bunch of ignorant fifth graders.
So who else has to do write for publication/print as part of their job?

Well, for the last three months or so I've been working in a research lab in France, and have had my fair share of article writing and correcting (my tutor's English not being very good). But those were for technical journals.

Ah, well I've written and edited technical reports for 20 years or so, and published half a dozen or so technical articles, and recently 3 creative non-fiction pieces.

Sadly, there is a reason I'm in sales right now... graphic design has turned into a sweat-shop job that barely pays more than minimum wage in many places. People think if you give someone a copy of "Publisher" you have a graphic designer. *deep sigh*.
The only money to be had in freelance work is in web design -- a field I've ventured into. I tried freelancing for a year and a half as a graphic designer and got tired of working 15 hour days for people who didn't appreciate the fact that a good graphic designer is WORTH the money you pay.

Unfortunately, that's true of MANY professional college-degree-requiring jobs these days. "Come on over! Get your college degree so you can earn $10 an hour at a nowhere job!" The money is in skilled labor and self-employment anymore.

Hey, hoptoad...have you ever looked into Medical Illustration departments or Visual Media groups that serve hospitals? They always need graphic designers there.
