For me, it varies according to what I have it on, and whether or not I have to make it.
For instance, for a sandwhich that I have to make, I prefer smooth because it's easier to spread. For a sandwhich that somebody else is making, however, I prefer crunchy.
Now, for icecream, melted smooth is obviously the PB of choice. People who like unsmashed peanuts within a ten feet radius of their bowl of icecream are freaks.
As a dip for fruit, the determining factor is whether or not the said fruit is supposed to be crunchy or soft. Once that is established, you should pick the oppositely textured peanut butter as the dip. For example, smooth peanut butter should be used with an apple, whereas crunchy peanut butter is better suited for a banana.
Since I love icecream and am usually the one making my sandwhiches, my vote goes to smooth peanut butter.

Why would you want to eat something that someone was too lazy to finish making smooth? I mean do you have crunchy mayo? Crunchy ketchup? Crunchy mustard.
It must be smooth.
Now the big question.
How many loosers here like Jiff instead of the only real peanut butter, Skippy?

Smooth is usually better, but I like crunchy, too. I just love peanut butter! As long as it's not the healthy stuff, that doesn't even have salt. Blech!

Okay, I couldn't find peanut butter, but I did discover caramel-flavored Chex Mix!
Good, but like all pre-packaged snack food, it would probably taste better without all the chemicals.

Peanut butter needs to have texture (I'm reminded of Nick Nolte's line in Down and Out in Beverly Hills), so it has to be crunchy. Unless it's on celery. Cause then it already has texture.

Crunchy, duh. Though I must respectfully disagree with Eruve: it's gotta be either just peanuts, or peanuts with a little salt and honey. And forget Jiff or Skippy; Arrowhead Mills all the way!

I like peanut butter. Any kind. Any form. Must have it! Almond butter and Nutella are pretty tasty too, albeit expensive.
sarcasticmuppet, Porter introduced me to Nutella, and I think he knew of it before living in Utah. We were both pretty happy when it "caught on" here. Now if we can only get that to happen with Vernors....

Nutella is NOT a Utah thing! It's a fun, classy European thing that shows that you're in a higher social class - you know, like mentos and orangina.
But now it's being cheapened. They put Kobe on the bottle! *shudder*
I suppose it's still tasty, though, and not as bourgeois as peanut butter. Honestly, once you convert, you'll never go back.

There are a couple of stores here where you *might* be able to find Vernors, but they rarely sell it in both bottle and can. It is part of the store's policy that if you request them to carry something, they will. We keep hoping that as people experience the loveliness of Vernors, there will be more demand.

I don't mind either, I love both...the thing is...after my friend has introduced me to real peanutbutter, I only allow two ingredients in mine...1) Peanuts, and 2) salt...preferably not salt. Satyagraha

If you wanna help support your fellow jatraquero, buy East Wind Nutbutters! (I live at East Wind Community, the nutbutters business is our main business.) Our stuff is available in the Midwest and Southwest. (Nutbutters tend to be a more regional kind of thing, since nutbutters are pretty heavy and expensive to ship... so, we're distributed in the Midwest and SW, Once Again Nutbutters is in the NE, Maranatha is on the West Coast, etc.)
Anyway... we're a worker-owned co-op and we make the non-Jif kind of nutbutters (no sugar, no preservatives, no hydrogenated oils, etc.) -- so, peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, tahini, and macadamia butter. Our stuff is WAY good (the peanut butter won a bunch of taste test awards a few years back), and it's also the cheapest natural nutbutters on the shelves, since you're not having to pay for inflated CEO salaries...
(Roasted cashew butter's my fave, crunchy almond butter's my second fave...)
I'll bring a bunch of nutbutters to BobnDana Con/Wedding.... tahini for baba ganoush... almond butter for almond pate... or, if we wanna get fancy, peanut butter for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches

oooh.. tahini. The only brand of tahini I can ever find here is Joyva, and then only at a couple stores. And once I had some in the cupboard that my roommate's boyfriend threw away because it "smelled rancid." Stupid Americans.

Crunchy. Definitely. Unless I happen to be extra poor at the moment, in which case smooth PB is easier to spread on real thin, which makes it last several slices of bread longer. But aside from that, crunchy.

Plaid's nut butters are SO good. He sent me some for the christmas gift exchange, and I don't eat any of the other peanut butter in the house, now.
I once made the mistake of buying 'lite' peanut butter. By accident of course. It was the most horrible crap I've ever tasted. It was an insult to peanut butter's good name.
