(better late than never... Update on Pg 3...Hopefully someone will post pictures)
Ok gang, Tom said he'd do his best to keep her out of this thread.
dkw and I got to talking at our last Midwest clump get together. We would like to make a baby gift for Christy and have you guys participate as well.
(Don't worry scottneb I'm only starting this project AFTER I finish fixing your bear.)
dkw and I found this quilt that shouldn't be too hard to make. We will probably have a blue background but do colors of pink, green and yellow for the kites to blend with their baby room.
We thought of something that you guys could make and mail to one of us in a simple envelope. A personalized ribbon (decorated as you see fit)saying who you are and any baby wishes, that we can stitch on the quilt as kite tails. If there are extra ribbons we can just put them on as squiggles in the border or background, sewn down so little fingers can't hurt themselves.
Is anyone interested in participating? I want to gauge interest and we need to get a bit more organized ourselves before posting an address to mail stuff to.

People could get fancier, but the easiest would be to simply buy about 6" of a high quality ribbon (go to a Walmart fabric department and ask which ribbons on their rack are washable) that you write on with a fine point sharpie.

Cute idea. Who is doing the piecing and quilting?
If you're pressed for time I'd go with strips for the borders instead of those hourglass blocks. Each one of those is going to have to pieced, and even with rotary cut methods will take a while.
Definitely count me in for a ribbon!

I think 8" or under would be a good length. Don't worry so much about width but leave at least 1/2 of space at either end of your message so that we have edges to work with if we need to taper a really wide ribbon down.

So our ribbons need to blend with the colors in that Kite quilt? Or are you using different colors than what the photos show? Not a butterfly quilt? (to match their walls)
Okay -- making sure I understand (because I'm not crafty). I go to store, get washable ribbon, write on it with permanent marker, and then send it to you (?) or to dkw? Is that all? You need financial donations to help with this?

If you would rather contribute finances for the fabric that is perfectly acceptable and we will write your name on a kite or on the border or something instead. We can figure out if pay pal is necesary. I really need to actually speak to dkw before I make any more plans on my own <grin>
The kit that is the example costs $42 but that doesn't include batting or backing fabric. We both have fabric stashes that we can cannibalize but the total cost will probably run around $60-70 as my best guess.
Belle we are going to divvy up the peicing and quilting somehow. We were thinking of actually doing sort of a quilting bee with sewing machines at a baby shower for her. But that depends on how the logistics actually fall out. Those triangles aren't that hard to make, I've done them before.

I shall attempt to control my twitterpation enough to do my part.
Farmgirl, you’ve got it right. Butterflies would be cool, but we liked the kites because we could get everyone involved with the tails.

Feel free to decorate your ribbon, with buttons, other ribbons, puff paint whatever as well! I think keeping it in pastelish tones would be a good idea but we will work it together somehow if you get a great idea involving something else.
I will only do that (buttons, puff paint, etc) if we are sure she is just going to hang this on the wall.
If she is really wanting to USE it as a quilt for that baby -- then I think little objects that can get pulled off and put in a baby's mouth are a BAD idea..

Farmgirl... I'm pretty sure that dkw and I are both good enough seamstresses that we can sew on buttons solidly enough that little hands can't pull them off. Normal buttons are really flaky and I end up resewing most of my own anyway. I don't know whether it is going to be a wall decoration or not. Haven't thought that far ahead <grin>

Count me in for sure for a ribbon (*mentally makes appointment to ransack mother's ribbon stash* ), and $5. If not many people end up chipping in, I can probably up that a little.
[Edit: grosgrain ribbon? that's usually washable, neh? and how wide?]

I think we will probably have the ribbons sent to Dana's post office box. She and I are going to try to get together in the next month or so for a fabric shopping trip in Dubuque.
I guess whether it is a wall hanging or an actual baby quilt depends on how wild you guys go.
As for width, see above. Leave at least 1/2 inch at the ends to make life easier for us.

AJ, I have some fabric I could send to help augment your stash. My daughter's room was done in butterfly and fairy prints, in fact I have the exact same flower fairies that are on their wall.
I've got lots of fabric left over from my decorating, many of them are butterfly prints and pastels. I haven't found anything new to do with them, and don't have any more young kids to quilt for, so they're just sitting here - be happy to donate some to the cause. If you want to email me your snail mail addy, I'll put some in a padded envelope and mail them to you. You can keep what you want, throw out what you don't.
Is there a minimum size? I have stuff cut into 6 inch squares, for ex. But I know for sure I have some fat quarters that I bought but never used that are butterfly print, and maybe even one that is a half yard or yard length. *thinks* it's aqua background wtih butterflies on it. I'll see if I can dig it out, take a pic, and show it to you.

Have y'all met Coccinelle? She quilts like crazy and has a fabulous stash of fabrics. Great resource, but is new and sort of shy. I'll try to make sure she sees this thread.

That sounds awesome! I didn't even think of that as a way to incorporate the butterfly theme -- use butterfly prints!

The one on the right, with the small print, is the one I was thinking of. Unfortunately, it's only a fat quarter. The one on the left is a flannel, I didn't know if you wanted flannels or not.
posted
While flannels are nice and I actually like the print on the left better my gut feel is that we don't want to mess with it, but would be better to keep everything in cottons for compatibility.
posted
I agree. I don't mix flannels and plain cottons in the same project.
I'll go through it again, and I'll post pics of fabrics I want to get rid of tonight or tomorrow. You can then pick what you want, and what you don't want I'm going to list on Ebay. That way I'll only send you what you think you can use.
I need to clear out my stash, I'm moving next week to my basement studio/project room and I want to get rid of all the stuff I'm not going to use.

I would love to contribute, but I feel out of my comfort zone. What can I do if I am totally craft incompetent? I'd happily make a monetary contribution.

beverly, you can also just buy a 6-8" piece of ribbon and sign your name on it. (Real name, screen name, both, whatever.) No craftiness required.
Last name = Williams
But even if you address it to 'dkw' the postmistress will know that's me. (It's a very small town.)

I'll send a ribbon too. I'd love to help further but distance kind of prohibits.
I'm really a cross-stitcher but I bought a bunch of stuff to try out quilting whilst on holiday last September - you may just have inspired me to dig it out and get started.

cochick, I'm a cross-stitcher, too. Can you cross stitch ribbons? I was thinking of a light pink or mint green gros grain.

Mrs. M. - not sure - never done anything that small before. I usually work on pictures - last piece was a copy of a Greg Olsen painting of the Saviour - it took months but it was worth it.
It would be a lovely idea though - I'll have to see if I can get hold of some gros grain ribbon locally - I've seen some examples on the web in pastels which should be nice.

If you want to do cross stitch fabric instead of ribbon that is fine as long as it is long and narrow I think I would make it a double width and sew the two long edges right sides together and then flip it right side out afterword so you have a tube, Then iron it flat. This will keep the edges from fraying.
(do all the sewing after the design is stiched of course) Or if you want give us an already cross-stiched strip maybe 1. 5 inches wide. I can do it. it should iron to around a 3/4 in strip so make sure your design isn't more than 1/2 inch wide

She is registered (I don't know all the places, but definitely at ToysRUs), and I would be thrilled to host a shower. It would be nice to have it here so that she doesn't have to drive anywhere, and I can put people up on a futon or couch.
