You would think that after being burned time and time again, I would think twice before jumping into another relationship that is almost certain to make me crazy and leave me stranded and alone, cruising the Internet for other broken-hearted people who will commiserate with me.
But I have seen the first two episodes of the new show “Drive,” premiering this Sunday, and I fell head over heels in love. I can’t wait to see how this exciting, character-driven show unfolds.
Which is why it is certain to be cancelled quickly: I like it. The curse awakens…Posts: 7790 | Registered: Aug 2000

I've been biting my fingers waiting for Sunday to roll around, your column has only made the wait that much more difficult!
I consider it my fault that I could not save Firefly as I was unaware of its existence until it was too late Curse religious missions!

The show is much more like "Heroes": serial stories like "Lost" and "24," but lighter. The drama and excitement is there, but there's lots of humor. I wouldn't watch it otherwise.
My son now believes I can produce unshown TV shows and demands I show him the rest of the season. I think he's joking... ?

I saw the ads too and was reluctant to go there. But now I'll add it to my DVR sched and see, just on your say-so Chris.

You know Fox loves you baby, but you know what happens when you make Fox mad. Come on back, honey. Fox swears, this time it will be different. Fox will make it up to you -- you'll see.

I will have to watch this show now. I had planned on avoiding it.
To be honest, I don't need another show in my lineup - I don't watch much television as it is. But I avoided Firefly when it first came out, too, based on one commercial I saw that just didn't grab my attention. I never would have known about it at all if not for Chris' proselytizing on Hatrack, and I absolutely loved Firefly.
So, I'm going to watch because Chris said so. (Don't let the power go to your head.) If it sucks, though, I will be obligated to hunt him down and dump his body in the Everglades.

It's the flip side of the Fox equation. Fox cancels more brilliant shows than all the other networks put together... but it also gives more brilliant shows a chance than all the other networks combined. They'll give anything a chance; they just won't keep it around long unless it hits it big.
For all its flaws, I think this beats the usual approach of only programming conventional stuff.

Sounds neat, Chris. My only quibble is that Sliders needed to die after John Rhys-Davies left the show. They brought in that unpleasant woman and I stuck around a while. But when they swapped out Wade for Charlie O'Connell, I bailed.
Not that I didn't like Charlie. I just couldn't deal with the unpleasant woman who showed a little more skin being the only regular female character. Stupid male sci-fi writers.

Well, I just saw the first two episodes also. And it's a brilliant show, actually, because the way the story is constructed (very much like Battlestar Galactica) -- it could go for years or for 13 episodes; it could be cancelled at any time and all of the loose ends could be tied up within 42 minutes, leaving the viewer to feel as if they experienced a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end.
Neat trick.
All they have to do is keep dangling the carrot of that finish-line (like BSG dangles the carrot of Earth).
My complaint is that the woman who plays Fillion's (spoilers) partner is, to me, completely unlikeable. I may not be able to continue watching the show just because of that bimbo's plastic acting.
They should have cast Amy Acker as that character and the bimbo as his wife. Man, that part was miscast.

Will episodes of Drive be available online?
I had to give up catching the premiere tonight because the rest of my family wanted to watch Planet Earth.

That was a really cool show. I only caught some of the pilot but all of the second one and I'm definitely going to watch again tomorrow, if I remember.
Did they explain why someone is putting down $32 million dollars for the winner of the race in the pilot? And why did only some of the racers have a person stolen from them while others are just in it for the money?

Wow...loving this show...which is a bad sign for me....I have bad luck on these sort of shows. In this case I'm thinking they'll keep this show around, they're giving it a pretty good slot (before 24) on a night people are used to watching those sort of shows. If they put the show on Thursday or Friday I'd be worried.

No, there was no explanations for either of those two questions.
I liked Drive, it's like a much better Gumball Rally
Good characters and actors, carchases and stunts, the mystery of why someone is manipulating all these people: a good excuse for a series.

I really liked it tonight. I think the pilot was better than the pilot for Heroes, which I love.
I really liked the whole cast of characters. From the mother to the brothers and then the cute father-daughter team. I'm glad that I have a reason besides just Nathan to watch the show.
This show has really exceeded my expectations. There were alot more twists and questions than I was expecting and during the ads my roommate and I couldn't stop speculating and theorizing. I'm excited to see where it goes.
And yeah, the promotion has been insane. Let's hope it brought in good numbers!

Tiffany and I both watched the pilot, and we both went crazy that we get our next fix tomorrow at 7:00pm! SO glad this will not conflict with Heroes.
I thought it was decent after the first episode but by the end of the second I was very interested/invested in the show. I really like all the diverse teams, I don't have a favorite yet.

There were a few moments that didn't quite ring true (the astrophysicist in the doctor's office, for example), but by and large, it was as good as I'd hoped. Nathan Fillion rocked, of course, but the rest of the cast was great as well. I was expecting to dislike the two brothers and the new mother, but they ended up among my favorite characters. I especially liked how Minear dispensed with the "aww cute baby" stuff early on, and then just let the mother be completely neurotic. Everyone else on the show is either excited or pissed off; it's fun to have one character who's just plain nuts. And the solution to the "penalty" was inspired!

Maybe I missed a detail earlier, but I didn't quite get that.
Help?
The race orientation guy gave the new mother (whose name I'm totally blanking on) the gun and told her to eliminate the blonde girl, but added that the girl had better be off that SUV by the end of the day, or the mother would be eliminated instead. Instead, the blonde girl decides to betray her friends and join up with the new mother, so that she is no longer on the SUV, but also isn't dead.
It's a plot twist that could have felt contrived, hinging as it does on an overly literally reading of what Orientation Guy said (the "Eowyn Defense," if you will), but the fact that it was the blonde girl herself who came up with the idea made it work for me. You end up still believing that New Mother Lady is crazy enough to have actually gone through with the shooting, while simultaneously getting some development on Machiavellian Blonde Girl- a deft bit of character work all around.

On the other hand, since Blonde Girl didn't actually hear what Orientation Guy said, I thought it felt contrived... but given the standard set by the show as a whole, that almost passed for normal. Ooh, maybe the gun was disabled, and Blonde Girl is working for Them!
(Note: that was sarcasm, not speculation.)
I've never gotten into Lost, 24, X-Files, etc., which may explain why I didn't like Drive at all. Too random.

I convinced my roommates to watch, and we all liked it. We did make a lot of fun of the jailed brother saying "homes" a lot, and that the daughter of the sick dad looks like a Las Vegas Lindsey Lohan impersonator (views were split if it was a drag show version).
Overall, very entertaining. We all though the new mom was the cutest female of the bunch, and we all loved how Mal is still Mal, beat up ship and all.

I like the show. The New Mom chick reminds me of Snow White and they drive cars very fast which is cool.

Ah thank you. I missed that "off the SUV" detail. Just like I missed the detail with the baby--where was it exactly?

We laughed like crazy. I'm completely loving the show, but wondering if it's just my unhealthy love for Nathan Fillion that's keeping me around. I guess it's enough.

Yes, Mal delivered that line with perfect timing.
It's not spelled out, but I think the baby is either in an adoption center or some kind of shelter for abused women.
When Melanie Lynsky/New mom (I agree, Mightycow, she is the cutest) is arrested then released, she freaks out when told her husband will be there shortly and begs to be put in jail. Seems like a battered woman to me.

At the beginning, when New Mom is in the hospital, the nurse asks her rather pointedly about New Mom's multiple bruises.
