Bangkok
Oriental setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world in a
Show with everything but Yul Brynner

Time flies -- doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change -- don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue

It's Iceland --
or the Philippines --
or Hastings -- or --
or this place!

Black bird singing in the dead of night
take his broken wings and learn to fly
All your life.
Your were always waiting for this moment to arise.

I know, I automatically think of a Beatles' song when I try to play this game !

Say goodnight, she waits for me to put out the light.
Lay there still,
She waits to break my will.
Yes, if I know the truth,
How bout you?
(She got it)
And in the daylight,
A BLACKBIRD makes a fire inside.
And when she is done,
She sleeps beside the night.
Yes, I know the truth,
How bout you?
(She got it)

In the night of love words tangled in her hair
Words soon to disappear
A love so sharp it cut like a switchblade to my heart
Words tearing me apart
She tears again my bleeding heart
I want to run she's pulling me apart
Fallen angel cries
Then I just melt away
She's a mystery to me
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl
She's a mystery girl

-- Roy Orbison "Mystery Girl" (written by Bono!)

And still we run, we run and don't look back
I'll be there, I'll be there
Tonight, tonight

I'll be there tonight, I believe
I'll be there so high
I'll be there tonight, tonight.

Oh come away, I say, oh come away, I say.

We can be happy underground
Who's got the looks?
Who's got the brains?
Who's got everything?
I've got this pain in my heart, that's all.
(Hey you with the long and lonely face)
There's got to be something else
Let me tell you something else
There was a girl that passed me by
She gave a smile but I was shy and looked down
(Don't look down no no! Go go underground)
Now now there's a place to go.
It's the morning now, its the evening
It's everything.
I click my heels and I'm there.

I want a New Girl
The kind everybody wants
The kind that shout it out
And then we laugh it off,
I'll be her terrorist
And she will be a looter
Eye of Fatima painted on her motor scooter
She puts on eye shadow
A deeper shade,
A deeper shade of blue
And then she gets in bed with you

They want you to be Jesus
They'll go down on one knee
But they'll want their money back
If you're alive at thirty-three
And you're turning tricks
With your crucifix
You're a star

Of course you're not shy
You don't have to deny love
Hold me, thrill me, kiss me, kill me

They can’t tell me who to be,
‘Cause I’m not what they see.
And the world is still sleepin’,
While I keep on dreamin’ for me.
And they’ll want to just whispers,
And lies that I’ll never believe.

And I want a moment to be real,
Wanna touch things I don't feel,
Wanna hold on and feel I belong.
And how can the world want me to change,
They’re the ones that stay the same.
I’m the one now,
‘Cause I’m still here.

As the daytime is stirring
Where the speechless unite in a silent accord
Using words you will find estranged
Mesmerised as they light the flame
FEEL the new winds of change
On the wings of the night

Night time sharpens,
heightens each sensation...
Darkness stirs and
wakes imagination
Silently your senses abandon their defenses...

Slowly, deftly, music shall surround you
hear it, feel it,
closing in around you...
Turn your face away from the garish LIGHT of day
Turn your thoughts away from cold unfeeling LIGHT.
And listen to the Music of the NIGHT....

Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams,
Purge your thoughts of the world you knew before...
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar......
And you'll live as you never lived before....

Softly, gently night unfurls its splendor,
Feel it, grasp it,
Tremulous and tender,
(something something something
da sonething something something.... I've heard this song 134 times and still don't know two lines....)
And listen to the Music Of The NIGHT.....

Oh, yeah, It's Music of the Night
from Phantom of the Opera

We can walk our road together
If our goals are all the same
We can run alone and free
If we pursue a different aim

Let the truth of love be lighted
Let the love of truth shine clear
Sensibility, armed with sense and liberty
With the heart and mind united in a single perfect sphere.

Rush, Hemispheres

By the way, Annie, do you own any albums by any bands other than U2. I could suggest a few if you need some ideas.

(Koholos, is it "open up your mind, let your fantasies unwind, from the power of the music that i write"?)

Issue in question, a joy triumphant,
Difficult to suppress.
Simple suggestion, enjoy the moment,
Agonize less.
Logical premise from the start,
Marrying both the mind and heart,
Issue in question,
Issue in question,
No question,
It's love!

This song is inspired by a good man
And his tune
Thinking good of others
Sing Amazing Grace to you
It doesn't really matter if you're all
Jumbled up inside
As long as you know love is
Endless and the world is live.

And I'll try not to sing out of key

You know "S" "O" "N" "G", why
You're going go join to God
You know "S" "O" "N" "G", why
Give away some him no lie
Give away some my de day no
You know
And though no one told you sky
And you feel
Like you pretend you can
You say go, you live
Go live outside of me
Don't you leave
Don't leave out part of me
Then I can feel
Like I feel before
Like I hurt now
And I see the floor
If you pick me up
Bits and pieces on this floor

Hey - you edited that one out from under me [Smile]

I'm from boring old America - I just have a fascination with world music, and a special penchant for Rai, a French-Algerian hybrid. I also have a lot in Spanish, French, German, some Turkish, Hindi, Swedish. Lately I've been on a Latin kick, which can be construed as cheesy, but I think Spanish is one of the languages best suited for the rhythm of music. Plus I'm trying frantically to learn Spanish for my trip to Mexico in three days!. Listening to music in a language really helps you remember word usage. And as a last resort, I can always fake like I'm fluent by busting out phrases like "Puedo escalar los Andes solo por ir a contar tus lunares" or "Te regalo mi locura y las pocas neuronas que queden ya..."

It's on this soundtrack. Sinead O'Connor does some of the vocals. There's also an instrumental version on one of the "Please" singles (the one with the Junk Day and Bitter Kiss mixes of "Dirty Day"). It says the music's by U2 and the lyrics are by Bono.

Oh, and I used "Big Girls Are Best" the other day. I don't know if it's against the rules to use the same song twice, but I felt I should point out that I beat you to it. [Razz]

Annie:

Sorry. I didn't mean to do the editing trick.

I'm pretty big into world music as well. Lately I've been getting into arabic jazz. There's a really great Tunisian oud player named Anouar Brahem. If you haven't heard of him, it's well worth it. I may even be able to point you to some sample tracks if you'd like. Rabih Abou-Khalil (from Lebanon) is really good also. And if you haven't heard any Hawaiian slack-key guitar, you need to.

As far as the latin music, I've got quite a bit of that. My favourite is Mana. That was actually what I'd added when I noticed it was too late and had to switch to Monty Python.

I'd ask you what kind of Turkish, German and Rai music you have, but I'm afraid if we do too many more non-lyric posts we're going to get in trouble. Perhaps a new thread or an email or something...

Good luck in Mexico. I'm jealous. I was in Galveston two weeks ago today, and the gulf was wonderful.

Back to the game, going off of Speed's since mine is apparently null and void:

But his hope was a rope, and he should have known.

New blood joins this earth
and quickly he's subdued
through constant pain disgrace
the young boy learns their rules

with time the child draws in
this whipping boy done wrong
deprived of all his thoughts
the young man struggles on and on he's KNOWN
a vow unto his own
that never from this day
his will they'll take away

what I've felt
what I've KNOWN
never shined through in what I've shown
never be
never see
won't see what might have been

what I've felt
what I've KNOWN
never shined through in what I've shown
never free
never me
so I dub thee unforgiven

His mother takes him by the hand
When he stops to think he starts to cry,

"It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog

But when I get home to you I'll find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright"

Beatles, "Hard Day's Night"
