His lady's aching to bring a body down
She daily preaches on where she wants to be
An evening with a movie queen, a face we all have seen

That's why they always love to get you high
And everybody knows you need the pain so much, lady
Well, keep in touch, baby
Just don't charge me with your rescue blues

The more you blame,
But everything still feels the same.
The more you hurt,
The more you strain,
The price you pay to play to game.

You left open the window till the morning and the winter walked in
Reality fired her wooden bullet, splintered under our skin
They say I'm walking on freedom, this is freedom
Now I know, now I know, now I know, now I know
I still don't blame you for leaving, baby
It's cold living with ghosts

I play Russian roulette everyday, a man's sport,

Where I really want to be,
It's already where I am,

Isn't this world getting harder to live in?
And isn't this road getting harder to travel on down?
It doesn't really matter, when it shatters the glass just falls
It's never made a difference, now you've got your due reward

Isn't one voice getting harder to come by?
Isn't one love getting harder to imagine now at all?
It doesn't really matter when it tumbles the weed just rolls
It's never made a difference, your lack of readiness is growing old

So we split and went to a party,
some friends my girl said she knew
But what a sight
'cause it's authors night
and the place looks like a who's who!

Now I'm pounding the ouzo
with Mario Puzo

Who's a funny fella?
W.P. Kinsella

Who brought the cat?
Would Margeret Atwood?
Who needs a shave?
He's Robertson Davies!

Ondaatje started a food fight,
salmon mousse all over the scene
Spilled some dressing on Doris Lessing,
these writer types are a scream!

I like to go out dancing
My baby loves a bunch of authors
We'll be together for ages
Eatin' and sleepin' and
Eatin' and sleepin' and
Eating und sleeping und
Turnin' pages.

Yeah!

Uh huh ... extra cheese
Uh huh, uh huh ... save a piece for me

Pizza party at your house
I went just to check it out
Nineteen extra larges
What a shame
No one came

Just us eatin' all alone
You said, "Take the pizza home"
"No sense lettin' all this go to waste"
So then I faced

Pizza all day
And every day
This cheese 'round the clock
Is gettin' me blocked
And I sure don't care
For irregularity

Tell me
Why'd you have to go and make me so constipated?
'Cause right now I'd do anything to just get my bowels evacuated
In the bathroom ... I sit and I wait and I strain
And I sweat and I clench and I feel the pain
Oh, should I take laxatives or have my colon irrigated?
No no no

Hello one and all
Was it you I used to know?
Can't you hear me call
On this old ham radio?
All I've got to say
I'm alive and feeling fine
Should you come my way
You can share my poison wine

No marigolds in the promised land,
There's a hole in the ground where they used to grow
Any man left on the Rio Grande
Is the king of the world as far as I know

While the music played you worked by candlelight
Those San Francisco Nights,
You were the best in town.
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl.
You turned it on the world ,
That's when you turned the world around.
Did you feel like Jesus?
Did you realise
That you were a champion in their eyes?

Say, there's a wreck
On the side of the road
Lots of blood and broken glass
The kid who was driving
I know from somewhere
Some kids just drive too fast
Wait just a minute
There's a beautiful survivor
With dancer's legs and laughing eyes
C'mon snake hips , it's all over now
Strap in tight cause it's a long sweet ride

In the corner of my eye, I saw you in Rudy's
You were very high
You were high,
It was a cryin' disgrace, They saw your face
On the counter, by your keys,
Was a book of numbers, and your remedies
One one of these, surely will screen out the sorrow
But where are you tomorrow

I can't cry anymore, while you run around
Break away, just when it seems so clear,
That it's over now,
Drink your big black cow and get out of here

-Steely Dan, "Black Cow"

(I actually happened to be listening to this one when your post came back, so it was easy.)
(This is getting interesting, but I have to work in the morning, so I'll start again tomorrow. Good volley.)

I never thought I'd grow up so fast, so far.
To know yourself is to let yourself be loved.

And I want to be addicted, I want to be secure,
I want to wake up after the night before.
But do you get me?

Do you ever get me?

I'll press your hand against my face,
weaken my resistance.
I'll pull the sheets over our heads,
let the broken sky break above our heads.

I run and hide from the things I know
Catch the dust up in my eye
All is lookin’ different as the years go by

Sometimes I,
need to remember just to breath.
Sometimes I,
need you to STAY AWAY FROM ME!
Sometimes I'm,
in disbelief I didn't know.
Somehow I,
NEED YOU TO GOOOO!

Don't Stay
Forget our memories
Forget our possibilities.
What you were changing me into
Just give me myself back and
Don't Stay
Forget our memories
Froget our possibilities.
Take all your faithlessness with you
Just give me myself back and
Don't Stay!

There is one story that
We are all connected to,
The ever-begging universal serenade.
Vibrating, horns crashing,
Symphony that the mystics made,
Love is everywhere,
Change is everything.
Destiny pulls another string.
Life, it rages on,
Standing holding to the seat
Of a straight-back chair.

I was so happy a couple years ago when they named that dinosaur after Mark Knopfler.

I love you so much
Can't count all the ways
I've died for you girl,
But all they can say is
He's not your kind.
They never get tired of putting me down
And I never know when I come around
What I'm gonna find
Don't let them make up your mind
Don't you know, girl
You'll be a woman soon
Come take my hand

If you don't want her to resent you when she's fourteen, you'd better either
1)Raise her on "Telegraph Road" and "Romeo and Juliet" (my personal Dire Straits picks), not to mention all the solo Knopfler stuff. Fortunately, I think he's still touring, but you'd best hurry. [Wink]
2) Or make it Jane Knopflera.

I pick (1), of course.

Son you better be ready for love
On this glory day
This is your chance to believe
What I've got to say
Keep your eyes on the sky
Put a dollar in the kitty
Don't the moon look pretty

Tonight when I chase the dragon
The water will change to cherry wine
And the silver will turn to gold
Time out of mind

-Steely Dan, "Time Out Of Mind"

[Thought this might be an appropriate response, since Mark Knopfler was the session-guitarist on this track. And it's brilliant, of course... anything he touches turns to gold.]

By the way, Matt, while R&J may not be my favorite track (not that I dislike it), good call on Telegraph Road. Brilliant song. The whole "Love Over Gold" album is almost perfect. Of course, it's still hard to top the self title album, but that's just my opinion.

One morning, one morning as work I begun
What did I see riding out of the sun
On the road from Lexington

One rider, one rider bent in the breeze
Down on his saddle, low to his knees
Coming through my willow trees

Now closer the terrible work of the gun
Was stiffened and black where his blood all had run
But I knew my wayward son

One morning, one morning the boy of my breast
Came to my door unable to rest
Even in the arms of death

You see them on the grass at lunch hour
Soaking up the vertical rays
In their summer dresses
A little smile can really make your day
Their kisses feel like real kisses
And when they cry they cry real tears
But what's left in your arms
When the static clears

They're landing on the Jersey beaches
Their engines make the white sand swirl
The heat is so intense
Earth men have no defense
Against Tomorrow's Girls

"Edna Million in a drop dead suit
Dutch Pink on a downtown train
Two-dollar pistol but the gun won't shoot
I'm in the corner on the pouring rain
Sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And I've been drinking from a broken cup
Two pairs of pants and a mohair vest
I'm full of bourbon, I can't stand up

Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, children are alone
Hey little bird, fly away home
Your house is on fire, your children are alone"

Moxy Fruvous, "Jockey Full Of Bourbon"

That's actually a Tom Waits song. And while I'm here, what's up with giving Urge Overkill even partial credit for Neil Diamond's lyrics? Just thought I'd ask. Carry on. [Smile]

[edit: added smiley, as I realized the post sounded a bit angry, which wasn't intended. [Smile] ]

Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the nighttime, yes
I climb through the window and down to the street
I'm shining like a new dime
The downtown trains are full with all of those Brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds

Well you wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that will ever capture your heart
They're just thorns without the rose
Be careful of them in the dark
Oh, if I was the one you chose to be your only one
Oh baby can't you hear me now, can't you hear me now

Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
Every night it's just the same, you leave me lonely now

-Tom Waits, "Downtown Train"

[This is a bit of a cheat, as these songs were originally on the same (extremely good) album, and one was made to be a reference to the other. But I'll take all the cheap shots I can get.]

Hey, as long as we're talking Waits, I just wanted to throw in an amusing anecdote that I found in an essay about him:

quote:
The one complaint Waits' fans have is that he doesn't tour (it seems he'd rather spend time with his family). In early 1996, however, he performed a benefit concert in San Francisco, for a friend arrested on trumped-up drug charges. The show sold out in forty-five minutes, and during the performance, someone called out: "Hey Tom, where you been?" Waits shot right back: "Where you been? You still working out at the airport?"

Outside of this window
In ten degrees just before dawn
A plastic Mary blinks
Illuminated from the inside
My heart glows with the spirit of Christmas
