Hi, people. Sorry for the offtopic post but, since I'm new here, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Eduardo. I'm Brazilian, 27 and live in Rio de Janeiro. I'm a huge fan of Orson Scott Card's books, but I discovered the forum only some days ago.
I hope we can engage in many interesting discussions about Card's works and...well...everithing else, hehehe.

Welcome to Hatrack! There is nothing inappropriate about introduction threads, and your spelling and grammar both fell well within the norms for Hatrack, so I wouldn't worry about it at all. Hope you enjoy the forum!

I think of my second language (such as it is) as that kind of modern art where you throw paint at the walls in nearly random fashion, particularly as regards word order. It's kind of sad to think this gleeful free-for-all feeling will go away as I learn to actually speak correctly.
That said, don't worry TOO much about grammar problems. I mean, the execution process for mistakes is really nearly painless, and we send a lovely card to your family afterwards.

Nunca, mas jamais mesmo pensais em discutir qualquer coisa que tenha a haver com homosexualidade, quem vai fazer o parte de "Ender" no filme que está para sair, ou quantos nomes differentes o máldito Pat usa. Estas coisa só dão encrenca.
Não se preocupeis com os ciumes das pessoas aquí quando a gente fala Portugûes- os pobre coitados não entendem o que é falar (ou escrever) uma língua suave e melíflua e assim é de se esperar que eles tentam inventar qualquer coisa para se desculparem de sua ignôrancia.
Sejais bomzinho e vê se não façais quaisquer anéis de poder malévolo por aquí, tá?

I had a student from the Czech Republic once. She was a semi-pro tennis player who looked almost exactly like Brad Pitt would have if he'd been a woman.
Do you read OSC in English, or in your native language?

Read 2 books so far - Ender's game (loved it, love it and will love it) and Hart's Hope (very interesting, never read anything like that before) Both in English - I gather, why read translations when you can read the originals.
Both books were recommended by friend Must say, was reluctant to read Ender's game first - never like Sci-fi, but glad I did, was SO WORTH IT. Can't wait to lay my hand on OSC's other work.

Crap. Babelfish doesn't translate czech; so while I can see that you translated my post I can't puzzle out what you said- at least the number 50 is highly suspect since it didn't ever appear in my post. Is czech written in cyrillic? I see a bunch of words which look like cyrillic words translated into english letters.

Jacare, I speak pretty basic Czech (can communicate meaning but vocabulary is flawed and have funny accent), and no Portuguese (though the Spanish residing in the farthest recesses of my memory got me the gist of what you said), so my translation had emphasis on "loose" and "idiosyncratic" - I took your topics and said what I wanted. I said, in sexy-accented Czech (which isn't even Tzadik's native language, of course, since he's from Slovakia *points above* though he speaks it also):
"And now about important things:
"Watch out for Ralphie. If she likes you, it's all good, but if she doesn't like you, there'll be pain [at least I'm pretty sure bolest is pain...] and death everywhere. Or something like that.
"There are a lot of things we've discussed many times, endlessly, like homosexuality and "Who will play Ender?" - and no one wants to talk about it more! So if you want to talk about it, people will complain, ok?
"Pat and Jon Boy have like 50 names. Sometimes we know which is Pat and which is Jon Boy, but they're all so similar it's not really important.
"I don't think anyone here speaks Czech or Slovak, but we do have a Polish girl, Kama. So I guess Kama might understand me; sorry for all the mistakes."

That was pretty much it. I didn't put the diacritic marks on anyway; I'm too lazy to switch my keyboard over and remember where all the different keys are. And no, Czech and Slovak are both Slavic languages that use the Latin alphabet, with the aid of a few diacritic marks.

Don't worry about the jealousy of some of the non-portuguese speakers here. The poor things don't know what it is to speak or write in a smooth and mellifluous tongue, so one should expect a certain amount of excuses.
Be good and take care not to go about making any evil rings of power, OK?

Na verdade meu português é brasileiro mesmo. Simplesmente gosto de usar conjugações e expressões inusitados pra me destacar dos outros xarás e para confundir os caras que falam espanhol e tem que usar babelfish para descobrir o que eu estou falando. De vez em quando nos temos umas rixas para determinar qual é o idioma mais bonito- o espanhol ou o português. O bom da sua chegada é que agora teremos mais soldados de nosso lado para triunfar sobre os malditos faldores de espanhol.

I've never been to Brazil, but it's on my list of countries to visit. I have friends who have taught ESL in Brazil, and a friend whose husband is Brazilian (well, his family is; he's a US citizen) though, and my wife's ex-husband spends quite a bit of time there.

Tzadik, does that word mean something different in Czech than it does in Hebrew? Or is it simply a name? I get a real kick out of it, anyway.
