Bok, I have always liked your honesty, and your polite way of expressing your opinion. I also like how you can change your mind about things, and not get rabid about what you are sure is a fact. You always have room for more knowledge in there, for another idea, and that goes a long way.

You have always been nice to me. Thanks.

Annie, you see clear through. You are brilliant, and you are not afraid to show your light.

I miss you on the lyrics game thread. There is no one to have a lyrical battle of the bands with, lately. What is up with that? That is my gripe concerning your posting style.

Trogdor: *agrees with rivka* I don't mind the teasing, but before I figured out you weren't being serious, I wondered if I (or the other people being teased) had ticked you off for some reason. The multiple user-names gets a little old every now and then, but that probably has more to do with my mood than anything else. Wish you posted more! And that's all.

Peter the bookie: Haven't read enough of your posts to say, but I don't have any problems so far...

Bok: No criticism from me, I always look forward to your posts.

Kat: A very select few times I was slightly annoyed that you seemed to be ignoring someone who was trying to discuss something with you, but again, that might've been my off-kilter interpretation of the events in question. Other than that, I think you're awesome, and I look forward to your posts as well.

Jon boy: How can someone possibly complain about the posting style of a grammar-nazi? No problems with me, I'm a fan.

T_smith: Dude, you're ridiculously cool. You're one of my favorite posters, I wish Utah was closer so we could hang out!

JohnKeats: You're another Hatrack fixture in my mind, and your posts are always thoughtful.

T.Analog Kid: No complaints from me. Wish you'd post more, but I understand there's that "life" thing you've got going.

Saxon75: I have yet to see a post of yours I don't like or respect. Stay here!

Rita Spankmistress: I'm still a spank-virgin, so unless you plan on remedying that sometime, I refuse to acknowledge the fact that you're purty cool.

Ryuko: I totally heart you, woman. Post more serious threads! Super-pale skin still rules...

Sarcasticmuppet: No complaints from me, I enjoy your posts.

Rivka: *laugh* Yeah, like I could criticize the uber-hugger herself. I love your posting style.

Teshi: The only thing I can think of to criticize you for is that you don't live closer to T_Smith, and as a result, he'll have to be content with Coke bottles. Otherwise, I like your posting style.

Annie: Sometimes you and Hobbes are a little too mushy for my tastes...oh, who am I kidding, I love Hatrack couples. *grin* No complaints from me, ma'am.

Derrel: I seem to recall you being a bit impatient with someone (though I've forgotten the particular thread). Other than that one instance, I enjoy your posts.

Zevlag: No complaints, though I don't think I've read enough of your posts to have much of an opinion.

Frisco: and we wuv yoo too, Fwisco! (((Frisc))) OMG! LOL YOUr So cool and ALOOF! ...which is about the only thing that can sometimes get to me; you'll occassionally post something seemingly only meant to showcase exactly how witty and above-caring you are. Other than that, I usually enjoy reading your posts.

Aka: Dudette, you're among the many reasons I love Hatrack; I always look forward to your thoughtful and caring posts, and I have no complaints about your posting style.

EDIT: Whoops! Didn't catch Elizabeth's posts in time!

Elizabeth: I've enjoyed your posts very much since you came to Hatrack. 'Specially the puns. *grin*

...and that's all, folks. My turn! [Smile]

I hereby claim the first bit of actual criticism in this thread. [Big Grin]

And yeah, Zotto, I've gotten that a lot lately. I didn't realize it got people so riled up. Unfortunately, as it's not intentional, I can't promise to stop. Either I'm funny and some people don't get it, or I'm not and I'm the only one who gets called on it. Either way, I'm not above caring, I just don't. I amuse myself, which I guess is no more or less onanistic than anyone else on the forum, just more annoying, apparently.

As for critique...I was only partly joking in my previous post. As much as I'd enjoy if everyone were here to please me, I don't wish for anyone in the forum to change their posting style. Even the ones who can't spell to save their lives add their own little spice to the place.

I'd offer myself for the feast, but most people here don't remember me......lol

Most of the people I've had problems with have decided to leave, unfortunatly not before some really cool people left as well. I enjoy posting here because most of the people who I have met here have been very cool.

Trust me, not all places on the web are this cool, or polite. We all have our moments here, but USUALLY it doesn't lasts long.

Pat: I first became heavily involved in Hatrack during one of your hiatuses. And so, when you returned, I only knew you as the guy who began all his posts with [/lurker mode] or some such, and not as one of the famous kings of Hatrack. You doubtless didn't notice me at all, as I was someone who did not exist when you left Hatrack. (I know the feeling from both ends, I think, since in the last few months I have not had the time to be on as much, and a lot of new people have joined who don't know me at all. So I have an ego thread in which a newbie can't think of anything better to post than how much cooler than I "Slasher" is. [Roll Eyes] ) Anyway, I irrationally associate your return from lurkerdom with my own fall into Hatrack obscurity. Most of the people with whom I had bonded most closely are big--fans, for lack of a better word--of yours, and I felt like I had a choice between joining in the hordes sucking up to you, or just staying out of those threads. Well, I have a perverse nature when it comes to things that everybody is doing; I never want to do them. I don't want to let other people make my judgment for me . . . and so I let other people make my judgment for me, except in the reverse. And so I stayed away from the threads where we played "Pat Games."

And I came to feel like an outsider where I had not felt like one before. Which is not a fault or a flaw of yours, or anything you did. . . . just one of those things.

And of course, that says more about me than it does about you.

Anyway, when we had that debate on the hug thread, in which I found myself arguing the opposite side of the issue from you and many other Hatrackers, I was touched by your desire to know my name, to kind of see your "adversary" in this case as human. I also felt complimented by your slamming of my "worst. dobie. ever." because I got the sense that you only put down people you thought could take it, and so getting put down by you was in a way a measure of respect in your eyes. But I can't compete with you in a put-down fight. I have my witty moments (I like to think), and I have my deep moments, but it all comes and goes in flashes with me, and so a slamfest with me is bound to make poor entertainment; you'll win every time. (Not that I wouldn't like to try . . . just being honest about my limitations.)

In any case, I decided to get over my playground pique and get to know you better through your posting, as I felt you had been doing by asking my name. I tried to look out for posts by you and enter into discussions that you were involved in, and I even proofread your résumé.

And what I found is that it's hard to get to know you from your posting. You always post in joke threads, but you very rarely post without your tongue planted in your cheek. Heck, it's possible that sometimes you're being serious and nobody can tell. I wonder if rivka (?) is still puzzled every time you hug her?

You are a Hatracker who very rarely shows vulnerability. And there's something to be said for that . . . I suppose you are less likely to be hurt. I, on the other hand, display vulnerability all too frequently. But I find myself feeling closer to those Hatrackers that are sometimes vulnerable.

I love sarcastic humor, but when it's your only speed, or your main one, it becomes hard to know to what extent you really are kidding. Or at least, I can't help but wonder.

So, on the rare occasions when I see you be more serious, it hits me like a blast of fresh air. Even when it's because you're angry, as in the parenting thread--at least I feel like I know something about you to be a fact. Just by coincidence I was reading Synesthesia's thread tonight, and I was stunned by your post there . . . how very thoughtful and kind in tone it was. Heck, what do I know . . . in the economy of Hatrack posts, maybe saving the serious posts gives them greater weight when you do trot them out . . .

Anyway, you seem like a quality guy. I wish I knew you better.

Oh, and the multiple screen names has never bothered me in the least. I don't get why people bring that up so much, in seeming seriousness.

So, um, yeah.

That what you wanted?

-o-

And, if anybody wants to critique my posting style, I think I'm up to it. Though I suspect this thread will be dying soon, as the number of people requesting critiques starts to exceed the number of people posting them. And as this starts to resemble the dreaded hug thread.

*hits Bok with a Wiley Coyote-type sledgehammer* You're so...like...dumb, dummy. Yeah.

Frisco: Alright. I can understand that, though it seems more than a little weird to me to not really want to "connect" more with the very people you're conversing with, and at times you might be hurtful to someone who DOES have that emotional investment, just for the sake of a laugh line. I still enjoy most of your posts, though. You certainly got the better of me and Lalo in that stupid frequin' insult thread you started a while back. *laugh* Wish I was home to meet you when you were in Portland, dude.

Kwea: hey, man, I remember you! *laugh* But not enough of your post content to criticize you, so...uh...you've been nice to ME in the past...

Icarus: you're one of the reasons I stayed at Hatrack when I was a lurker; your posts are always intelligent and thoughtful, and I enjoy reading 'em. No complaints here.

Kayla: You don't post often enough, which is my sole complaint for you. Grr.

Pat, the reason so few people are actually offering the kind of critiques you asked for is because there's nothing we see to gain from it but hard feelings. Sure, you can sometimes be too bitingly sarcastic (you've never been so to me), and sure, you had a lot of screen names. So what? Those things are what Pat is.

Would Thor be any fun without his distinctive posting style? Would Jon Boy be who he is without his incessant gripes about language? I would venture to say no. I didn't marry Jon Boy for his grammar gripes, but they're a part of him, so I love them. The only time I feel it is helpful to criticize someone is if their behavior is harming me or others. There are definitely a few people on Hatrack who regularly get on my nerves, but then, I probably get on theirs too, so it's all good. That's part of being a person who deals with other people in all their imperfections.

I wish we could just decide to do that instead of trying to fit everybody into a normal and "likeable" human being.

[/rant]

And Frisco, I'll see you over in the hug thread. You look like you could use a few warm fuzzies. [Razz]

quote:

...and I hereby apologize for any inadvertent attempts to homogenize Hatrack into polite little lackwits. [Smile]

Brinestone: How about just a high-five? That thread gimme the jibblies.

Zotto: I'll be in Portland again sometime soon. My personality is much more suitable for the real world(well, mine at least). Unfortunately, being myself online doesn't go as well...but it never crosses my mind to be someone different online, even if it would lead to me being cast in a light more similar to the flesh me.

Pat Man – You know, I’m generally chomping at the bit in order to lay into someone, but I really don’t have anything on you. Many of your jokes are more “lame” than “funny” in my books, but I’m sure many, many people would say the same about me and fair enough. I generally enjoy reading your contributions to serious threads more than your fluff, I think you’re really even-handed and are able to say your piece without getting people riled up. You do, however, have hot button issues where you seem to be chomping at the bit to find offence (like the thread about parenting). But I think that’s true of the majority of Hatrackers so I can hardly hold it against you.

Bok – Again, nothing but praise. I really *really* like your posting style on serious threads. So much so that if I’ve entered “skim mode” as I’m paging through a thread I’ll stop and check out your post if I see your name. Of course, I’m sure it’s largely because I agree with you most of the time [Wink] But I do think your thoughts flow clearly and eloquently and you’re one of the best on the board at being calm and rational no matter what’s whirling around the thread. Which is probably the biggest reason why I stop to read your posts, actually. But, really, since you asked for something other than adulation I guess I should stop. Oh, wait, enough with the dobies already! Even though you have made the only dobie I’ve ever found funny your signal to noise ratio is still terrible! Stop! Please stop!

T – Like everyone else has said, you’re way too hard on yourself. You’re already everything you seem to wish you were, you just don’t seem to know it yet. You just need some confidence; once you hit your stride in your 20s you’re going to be an unstoppable force. You’re also able to do things outside of Hatrack for people that really endear them to you. There’s a reason you can wander into any thread, post a mope, and people will flock to you for the next several posts. The more I read your posts the more I get a kick out of your sense of humour and, on the list of Hatrackers I want to meet some day you’re close to the top of the list, if not already there (depends on who made me laugh most recently).

Rita – You should have known better than to pick up one of Ralphie’s old names. Everything you ever do will be hollow and pale in comparison. I’m sorry; it was a losing battle to begin with.

Rivka – What’s with all those spaces between paragraphs! Too much of a good thing! Right, I think we know where the other stands wrt the smiley issue. I kind of regret that E-mail conversation though, because I felt like we were friends before it and now we don’t seem to address each other unless we have to. However, I suspect that impression is only on my end. Needless to say, I like you so much more since you stopped posting the gay train right left and centre (although, amusingly enough, my use of smilies seems to have gone through the roof since.) Like others on this board, I think you often try too hard to be offended but mostly I wish you didn’t feel like you have to defend your religion every time it’s mentioned. That’s not a criticism or a judgement, I honestly wish it didn’t have to be so and I think you’re really to be congratulated for answering endless streams of questions.

Annie – You know, I’ve been pretty rough on you lately, haven’t I? I’m not going to say anything about your posting other than I’m sorry if I offended. I can’t change this board into exactly what I want it to be, no matter how much I may want to.

Darrell – I haven’t read a lot of your posts so I can’t say much but I do want to tell you to not worry so much about what everyone else thinks of you. If someone doesn’t write back instantly, that’s fine, it’s not a slight. You don’t need to try and ingratiate yourself with the “Hatrack Celebs” (truncated to annoy Annie and others) in order to fit in. It’s too bad people had that little tiff at you in a thread a while back, I don’t think that had any place on the board and should have been left to E-mail and I notice you haven’t posted anything other than congratulations since. I hope you’re taking this time to lurk and get to know the feel of the board a little better before jumping back in and haven’t lost your nerve for it altogether. I think there’s a lot you have to offer.

aka – I have to say, I frequently find your posts to be grating. I understand that you want to be a champion of the little people, but sometimes I feel like you come from it from too high a perch. It’s Ok for someone to have a thought or a feeling that you disagree with, and you are allowed to say so. It won’t shatter the person to be disagreed with; sometimes the last thing someone needs is to be defended. I think the things you’ve done for a lot of members is fantastic and is a huge donation of time on your part, but for some reason, of all the regulars, I feel like I know you the least. I’m just rambling at you, aren’t I?

Frisco – I don’t think you asked to be included in this critiquing business, but you kill me. Consistently. I’m sure people think that the last thing you need is encouragement but hey, just thought I’d say that somebody other than you finds you funny. Someone needs to post a link to your How to Accept a Hug Picture before this thread gets out of hand.

Icarus – I wrote this purely because you said the thread was about to die, never mind how much I may need sleep. So hey, this whole rambling judgement from me is entirely your fault. And you’re such a good guy I’m sure you’ll be all too eager to take the blame [Smile] But what can I say about you? You’re the quintessential member. Able to see things from both sides of the coin, insightful, able to be passionate and rational, you can be blindingly funny, able to share the intimate moments of your life and draw people closer to you. A huge part of this is the amount of time you’re willing to put into the place and the people (like the entire core community) and I’ve nothing but good things to say about you. Far be it for me to puff that head of yours up any more [Wink]

… Hmm… this seems to have had a lot more to do with posters than their style in terms of grammar or syntax. Don’t know what got in to me tonight. Sorry if my bleary eyes passed over anyone, it wasn’t intentional.

And no, I’m not putting myself up for critiquing, there are enough people in here clamouring for attention already. I have a voracious appetite for attention for a number of different things, but how I post on Hatrack isn’t one.

I've been working on breaking up my posts into smaller paragraphs because I think it makes it easier read, everything feels so cluttered when it's just one big long paragraph.

I'd like to be critiqued and I'll critique everyone else too, but am going to wait until the morning, when I can type without mispelling every word.

Wow.

When I started my graduate program we spent a long time on the issue of feedback. We learned that the most important part about feedback is that it isn't used very often because people get their feelings hurt, and that people are afraid of hurting people's feelings so it just doesn't get done alot.

Which is sad, because good, honest feedback, given in a tone of mutual respect and admiration, even if harsh at times, is invaluable to a person exhibiting worthwhile change. I think changing yourself for the better is a very good thing if you need to do it.

That's why Icarus's post is excellent. It points out my online flaws, makes me see myself in an entirely different light. And I dig that. It gives me something to work on. And it was pretty nice, too.

I've never intended my posting style, in normal every day life to be mean. Those who have met me in person know that I smile alot, I laugh alot and generally like to have fun. I was raised with a very frank, cutting sense of humor that has been known to make people cry before, and in the same breath, has impeded my progression in other areas.

If I seem mean, I'm probably doing it on purpose.

Anyway, I probably need to be nicer to newbies at first then beat the hell out of them later when they know me.

Anyway, thanks for the input. I really appreciate it. You guys are great.

Okay. I'll step up to the plate. Harsh as my critique of this thread was, I'm willing to see what good it might do me. I'm not ready to critique anyone else yet, though.

That's funny, I don't remember asking for critiques...

Saxon, I hate when you ask for criticism and then lie about it later.

For Jon Boy to act out his raging crush on me in his own unique, school-boyish manner.

I'd sort of assumed that if we post in this thread, we're opening ourselves up for critiques. Sort of a "don't dish it up if you don't want to have it served" thing happening. [Big Grin]

That said, if anyone wishes to critique me...shoot.

I would like to take this opportunity to say that I like Icarus's little "-o-" thing to separate ideas. It looks cool, and it does its job.

And sarcasticmuppet trusted celia wayyy too much in the last mafia game. I wanted to call out from death to beware her evil wrath, but alas, I was dead and thus mute.
