I ordered this DVD in honor of ITLAP day. I remembered it vaguely from my childhood as being really funny, but I couldn't remember much about it. Just finished watching it.

All in all, it's a got a lot of good stuff in it (it's got some really great lines), but I think it's really drug down by Graham Chapman's non-inflected, wooden performance. Peter Boyle, Madaline Kahn, Marty Feldman, Eric Idle, and John Cleese do a reasonably good job, but most of the rest of the cast is just too flat.

Also, Johnny Depp just does such a better crazy pirate.

Anyone else seen it?

I've seen it, but not since I was in 6th grade or so. I remember it being a disappointment, more or less in the same league as Jabberwocky.

"Then I'll just have to cut off your head and eat it! Won't be the first head I've eaten."

That movie did have some moments, but yeah, it never reached the heights of absurdist humor that that cast was capable of.

As far as Johnny Depp goes, he's something of a rarity in movies these days: an actor that can actually act.
