Grrrr, yet another thing we disagree on. I can't stand that cartoon, but then again I can't stand any cartoons that have come out in the last 15 years except some powerpuff girls episodes, but beyond that I am kinda angry about the only stuff animated worth watching is some anime, pixar movies, and the occasional one hit wonder.
edit: Also I myself cannot elect anybody to be the best character ever, nobody comes out on top in my mind.

I can't name a favorite, but the medium-sized billy goat gruff has got to be the most non-descript character ever.

Snufkin from the Moomins. Steerpike from Gormenghast. Cat-Woman from Batman. Audrey from Twin Peaks. Sue White from Green Wing.

The guy is the primordial Ender, Yossarian, and Harry Potter. He couldn't abide by some man's rules when they clashed with his wise intuitions. Robin Hood would be another, but Hood enjoyed too much popular support.
Antigone would be another, except she didn't feel her plight as deeply as Achilles understood his.

Seeing as I came out in the last 16 years, I think that gives me an excuse
However Hobbes is a worthy nomination for all ages I think.

Spike from what? I assume your talking about the dog from Rugrats. I can't think of any other spike of note.

Yeah. What he said.
Although if a female needs must be added, I'll volunteer the many incarnations of Helen (of Sparta/Troy/wherever).

The best 'charecter' ever would probably be... Brom, definently, from Christopher Paolini's 'Eragon'. What a captivating and orginial character!!! How could somebody *not* fall in love with him... I cried when he died.
But seriously, Madame Foster from 'Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends'is totally awesome (And yes, this is one of the few animated cartoons that doesn't cheapen my quality of life) And no, I'm not being sarcastic, like earlier in my post.
