Realize this doesn't matter to everybody, but I thought some of the LDS hatrackers might care. Faust was one of the three men the Mormon church calls "President."

Faust was a good man--served his mission in Brazil, so that always gave me a bit of a feel of kinship with him.

Not unexpected at all, but he'll be missed.

Thought I'd share.

He was our most visible democrat, though he didn't go off about it very often. He was a very meek but intelligent trusted servant.

Heard about this while on vacation on Friday I believe. Faust was a really good man, and definately a visible Democrat.

So does anyone think an apostle will move in to replace him or will they dip down into the lower tiers?

As I understand it, the members of the First Presidency come from the Apostles.

I don't believe it HAS to be that way, but traditionally that has been the case.

According to Wikipedia, anyone who is a high priest can be a counselor in the first presidency. The last counselor who was not ordained to the office of apostle was Thorpe B. Isaacson, who died in 1970.

Edit: Gah. It won't let me post a link that has parentheses in it. Well, at least this link has some of the same information.

Jon Boy - you can use TinyUrl in place of a link that won't work, can't you?

After a cursory consideration, I think Holland will fill the vacancy. I still have no idea who will fill the gap in the quorum of the twelve.

There are generally actually 15 apostles at any given time, so a new apostle will be called. I also would tend toward thinking a younger member of the quorum will be called in. I guess when President Hincley was younger, he was called as a third counselor. I'm not sure if there were 16 apostles at any point. I know there was a time when two apostles died, more than one conference apart, without one being replaced. If you look in the back of the church history manual, it is possible to track.

Care to make it interesting? [Big Grin]

I expect one of the more seasoned members of the Twelve to be called into the First Presidency, and a new Apostle to be called from the Seventy.

I think the speculation is pointless, and worse, presumptuous.

Oh, I think it's more on the level of wondering what letter the last named storm of the season will be. Bednar wasn't a seventy. I think it will definitely be a man, though.

I think he'll be a member of the Church, and be fairly financially independent. Most likely he will be married and have grown children.

Really? It may be pointless, but I think it's just human nature, and totally harmless. Now if we start getting bent out of shape because "our guy" isn't picked, that's certainly presumptuous.

Neither of them are dead. [Smile]

Well actually I have to wonder if they are NOW dead now that the purpose in preserving them alive has been fulfilled.
