Checked out the Hillerman site today - they got about 200 entries for the novel contest, and will be announcing november 1. Wish me luck? All good karma greatly appreciated.

Man, there's nothing as good as having supportive friends! Thanks, everybody. And I'm in the northeast corner of arizona, albuquerque is sorta in the easterly middle of new mexico. And St. Martin's Press is in New York. So just slop it around any old which way!
Hey, Annepin - did you enter? Are you familiar with the contest?

it was the first thing i posted here. Everybody helped me an amazing amount with the intro and with the query letter. IAB even read the first chapter or so, although I cannot imagine a MC less like IAB's Pantroth! He gave me a great crit, though, in spite of his misgivings, and really helped me tune up the opening.

Pyre, that sounds like a story, too. It seems wrong, but I think it's all right. Or maybe a song!

I'm sure that there are instances that call for a semi-colon, but they must be rare. 3 minutes per side maximum.

i can't remember spock ever using clauses. It seems like the very idea of a "dependent" clause would make a Vulcan's skin crawl. And I'm pretty certain that whole "trailing off with ellipses" thing isn't in his scope. Although, maybe from his mother's side of the family . . .
