Hi, people.

I'd like to know if anyone here is interested in playing some D&D (3rd edition) by e-mail. I did that sometimes (DMing and playing) and it's very fun. Already tried to put together a Hatrack D&D group once, but it didn't work very well at the time (my fault - I had to leave Hatrack for a period). Now, if anyone is interested, I have it all planned. I'll be running a very good adventure called "The Longest Night", which is part of a trilogy called "The Witchfire Trilogy".

I've read the adventure and I think it is a really nice one, albeit a little dark and brooding.

So, I'd like to invite 4 or 5 players interested, who could post at least 2 or 3 times a week (we'll talk about that and character creation later).

Well, that's it. Game, anyone?

I'm already up to my eyeballs in a game, or I would, but I just wanted to throw out the idea that rather than do it by e-mail, which takes forever, to do it via a chat program. I played that way in a campaign for several months and it was pretty nice. We tried doing voice over IP, too, but since some of us were on dial-up, it didn't work that well.

Also, you could try going to that link, then go down to where it says 'seeking players' and try to find more people there if you can't round up enough people here.

I know I could go to a D20 specific board, but see...Hatrack is the only forum where I'm posting right now. So, I guess It would be nice to play with some hatrackers. (oh, yes...and I used to read some gaming forums. Trust me, I'd rather not playing to some guys out there)

Last time I had not any problems assembling a game group over here. As I said, It was my fault the game didn't begin, because I had to be away for some time.

Well...2 players already. 2 more and we can begin.

Oh...and nobody needs books nor dice.
Playing by chat would be nice, but find a timeframe where everybody would be available could be hard. Let's see, when we have everybody ready.

Shan, prolixshore and Human are already in.

One more and we'll be all set

(I knew it would not be hard to find a group over here)

Oh, just a tiny bit to whet your apetites:

The Witchfire Trilogy introduces a new fantasy world - the Iron Kingdoms. Within the Iron Kingdoms, classic fantasy takes on a new edge, and the PCs will encounter steam power, pistols and cannon almost as often as swords and sorcery.

Yup, all 3rd edition classes are still available, although they may have a unique twist (given the quirks of the setting).

I haven't played D&D for a long time...before the second edition came out...although I was still playing when 2 nd came out, and we stole a lot form it.

I use to love playing magig-users, but one thing I remember hearing is that the magic system was completely revamped....how much difference is there?

I wqould be interested, possibly....

The magical system isn't very different from what it once was. They kept it so older players "could still recognize the D&D feeling" when playing the new edition.

So, are you in, Kwea?

If you're in, I'll still accept one more player (if there is anyone else interested) and one or two "alternates", who will be lurking (watching) the games and may be called to fill in if some of the players have a problem or something.

Magic users fall into 2 distinctive types:

Traditional Wizards - the old magic-users we all know and aim for. They memorize spells beforehand and function much the same as old magic-users.

Sorcerers - they have ingrained magic. It burns in their blood, sometimes literally. They get free spells they can cast at will, but their overall spell selection is limited. Any spell chosen is chosen for life.

As a side note, you can download the d20 rules system for free if you want a reference since the system is "open license."

Download here, from the Wizards of the Coast website

*Note: this is d20 3.5. I can't tell you how much it differs from 3.0, but be aware there is a difference somewhere.

Oops, sorry Eduardo, I didn't see your post about being online until now. I'll be on AIM tonight, if I can get it to work. I am having some trouble with my connection, though : In the evenings it drops out and comes on again at random times. My ISP, helpful sorts that they are, says 'there is no estimated time of repair.' So I'd prefer to play by email.

Comrade prolixshore, I am pleased to meet you.

Twinky and I both host mailing lists and archives for other Hatracker PBEM games. At least, we both used to host mailing lists; these days my server sucks so he's hosting all of the lists, and I maintain archives for the two games I'm in. If you would like to have an archive or mailing list set up, I'd love to host you, and it sounds like twink would also be interested.

Jaime,

You can find the rules for the d20 system version 3.5 here and the rules for version 3.0 here.

As for examples of play-by-email D&D games, check out the archives of the Overlook Campaign, the Segreda Campaign, and the Khadanira Campaign.

Well...we already have a bard and a Druid. I'd suggest that the three people who still haven't a character take

- at least 1 fighting type (fighter, ranger, paladin or...monk)
- at least 1 arcane spellcaster (wizard or sorcerer)
- the third could be anything you want, really.

Consider this.

I will not be online tonight (saturday is girlfriend's night, you know), but I'll probably be online for most of the sunday night.

See ya, folks.

The Steamjacks are really some kind of robots. They are driven by magic and steam power.

The firearms are crude, early stuff. They don't use gunpowder to fire, but expensive alchemical products. Only the wealthy or great adventurers commonly use them. Swords, Bows and magic are still the weapons of the day.

Steam power and the efficient labor provided by the steamjacks are driving the Iron Kingdoms to an unprecedent industrial revolution.

Not at all, although religion, in the Iron Kingdoms, have an interesting twist:

Read about the deities here.

I'd advise you to take Morrow as a deity.

(oh, yes...there's not stats requirements anymore, to any class. So, if you wanna be a paladin, just do it! ) [Wink]

Very good, Morrow it is. Reading the background info, I came up with the following tentative life story : Born in the Protectorate, Garrett rebelled early against its harsh strictures and priesthood. Forced to flee after an argument came to blows, he was taken in by a village priest of Morrow, just across the border in Cygnar, and soon converted to this much more sympathetic religion. However, while you can take the boy out of the (as 'twere) Bible Belt, you cannot take the Bible Belt out of the boy. Garrett's version of Morrow is far sterner than his mentor's, focused more on punishing evildoers and protecting the weak than on internal growth. Bring them the Light!

I hope this meets with your approval? If so, I'll flesh it out a bit more. If not, I can come up with something else. And perhaps even a slightly more original name.

I will take the wizard then, if it isn't too different from what I remember.

Is there a link to the newer magic rules and classes?

I like the idea of inborn magic, it seems more real...as real as something like that can be, anyway. If magic was just words and gestures, it would be too easy to do, and would be more widespread.

But I don't know which set of restrictions would be good for theis coampain, and I don't know which type I would rahter play...the wizard I am use to, or a new type althogether.....

Although I also have some unused background stories that I can adapt to this world...

hmmm....

The one with inborn magic would be the Sorceror. He don't have to prepare spells in advance, like the wizard, and can cast many spells per day, but he know only few spells (so re repeat spells a lot).

Kwea, you can follow the link TMedina kndly provided. There you'll find all the new D&D rules.

And...King of Men, I'm proud to aprove your character's story! It's very good, and will help a lot with the adventure's plot! [Big Grin]

Although I haven't fleshed it out completely, because I was waiting to know more about the story, I'm thinking my druid character rejected the aims and structures of his society (cygnar) in particular the overuse of machines. He runs away....meets hermit druid who takes him under his wing...years pass...

well you get the picture, ill fill in more later as long as you have no problem with this.

Thanks, I'll write up a fuller story. When I think about it, I think that fight was over a girl. Possibly (gasp) alcohol was involved. I wonder if she still likes Garrett? But most likely she was sent off to a nunnery.

I'm only guessing shan, but I think you should be fine. It's my understanding that this will mostly be done over email. We were using AIM to roll dice for stats, but I'm sure you can do that yourself or eduardo can do it for you, whatever he decides. (Eduardo, please forgive me, I am acting like I'm in charge again. Bad habit on my part I guess.)

That's my understanding of it, but if I'm wrong, I'm sure Mr. Sauron will correct it. He is out with his girlfriend tonight as I understand it. I wish I was....too bad she went away for the weekend.

Mm...I think my character will have been a street rat from the poorer sections of Caspia, who survived on petty theft and the occasional bit of street-performance until an old bard recognized his talent and took him in.

After the old man died, he's been wandering around, performing for his room and board, but is getting bored...perhaps looking for a bigger adventure.

And no, he doesn't have a name yet...names are the hardest part.

It's a lot more fun in person and easier to learn - although since this is a play-by-chat/email game, it wouldn't be that complicated to learn.

Check out the multiple links to the free rules and give them a read. It's not complicated once you've skimmed the basics once or twice.

Well, I could always sit out, I guess. I don't really know the rules, although I just read up on them a bit.

I remember how it was when I DM'd years ago; no one else wanted the responsibility, they just wanted all the fun parts of playign.

If Eduardo doen't have room for you Alcon, I might be willing to be the floater, just so that I learn how to do this under the new rules.

Well, new to me rules... [Big Grin]

We need some sort of magic-user, and that is one area that is fairly different from 2nd edition. I might be better off playing a simple ranger character, or a rogue. Those characters seem to be pretty much the same as I remember, and I played a lot of them back then....when I could get out of DMing, that is.

Would you be willing to play some sort of magic-ucer for them? Either a wizard or a sorcerer would work.....

And I will either be the fill in, or run a ranger or rogue.

Hi again, folks. First of all: I usually DM for groups of 6 to 7 people. Unfortunatelly, such numbers would be too much for the "Witchfire Trilogy" (I'd have to revamp encounters and NPC levels, and it's a pain). So, the 5 players max is still on.

Once again, the first ones to call dibs were Human (who already have his character sheet ready), prolixhore (who already rolled his character), Kwea, King of Men (whith a cool paladin concept) and Shan.

Alcon and Mabus are listed as lurkers.

If some of you'd like to change places (such as Alcon / Kwea) that's your thing, but please tell me as soon as you solve it, ok? [Smile]

As characters go, we already have:

Human - Human/Bard
Prolixhore - Human(?)/Druid
King of Men - Human/Paladin
Kwea - (?)
Shan - (?)

Shan, if you don't have AIM, we can play solely by e-mail ,that's no problem. But, just a question...there is no possibility you can download and install AIM? It's really easy (and free), you know.

Ah, yes...I'm creating an Yahoogroups mailing list, so we can start doing gaming stuff out there. You'll receive my invitation soon.

Alcon and Kwea, please, decide which of you will play and who will lurk, ok? Ah...I'm already typing the basics of the scenario ("The Longest Night" is supposed to be an introduction to the "Iron Kingdoms" world, so the information I'm typing + the ones you'll find in the Iron Kingdoms Homepage (I provided the link earlier) is enough to play.). I'll send the Info as soon the mailing list is all set. I'd put it here, but since I'm copying from the adventure, I don't know if there would be copyright issues.

Well, that's it for now. When you receive the invitation to the mailing list, please answer as soon as you can.

(Oh, yes...does anyone out there would like to enter the list as a spectator, just to read the messages?)

Hi again.

Already created the e-mail list. It is called D&D Hatrack. I sent everybody but King of Men an invitation to join the list.

King of Men, unfortunatelly I don't have your e-mail adress. Could you please send it to me? If you don't want to post it here, you can e-mail me (my address is in my forum profile) or you can go to The D&D Hatrack list homepage and register yourself.

Hi Eduardo -

AIM crashes my computer - I've tried a couple of times. It sounds like other folks might really want to play that way and I don't want to be a stickler . . . if folks are okay with e-mail, I'd love to participate, otherwise, I can change places with a lurker?

Let me know what works for the group as a whole. [Smile]

Also, did you receive the e-mail I sent?
