Cafe Pasta

afe Pasta has a perhaps-too-trendy neon-light-and-stainless-steel decor, but the food — a light Americanized Italian cuisine, with perfect fresh pastas and interesting, often surprising sauces — transcends decor and even the better-than-average live music (jazz piano and really interesting vocal stylings). The restaurant is located in the State Street shopping district of Greensboro, about the closest thing to a "charming" shopping area we have. The salads are excellent, with a good mix of spring greens and bitters, and the raspberry vinaigrette is never overdone. The fresh, crusty rolls are not authentic Italian — which is all to the good, since I could never get used to the unsalted breads of Rome and Florence. Good as the entrees are, however, I must confess that I return again and again primarily to have their amazing veal sausage. Very spicy indeed, it may be the best sausage ever made anywhere by anyone. Or at least, the sausage I like best. Sometimes when we don't feel like cooking, we order take-out and bring it all home, and you know what? It's even good on our own china sitting at our own table.
