The building looks like a dive, just off Friendly near the intersection with Aycock, but once inside the completely nonsmoking (thank you!) dining room, what you see are walls covered with interesting work by sincere but undertalented local artists and small, simple tables covered with some of the most interesting combinations of cuisines you're likely to find. Sandwiches on every kind of bread from french rolls to pita, with hummus as likely to show up as fresh cucumber and sprouts. Strange but wonderful soups. Intriguing entrees that may not always leave you ecstatic, but will at least reward experimentation. Even though the entrees are good, we hardly ever get to eat them because the appetizers seduce us every time, leaving little appetite for a full entree. Instead we usually end up eating sandwiches, even for supper — and we are never disappointed. The key word here, though, is "supper." Partly because of the informality, partly because of the lightness of the fare, we think of Southern Lights when we want something quickish and not terribly heavy — when we're going to a movie or play or concert (yeah, right) and the meal isn't the centerpiece of the evening. It's also less expensive (though none of the restaurants we frequent in Greensboro are expensive by L.A. or Manhattan standards).
