ate City Chop House is in a lovely tree-shaded building at the corner of Market and Holden, with a graceful but glittering interior that looks formal but still lets you feel comfortable when casually dressed (which I usually am when I eat out). The shrimp cocktail sauce has so much horseradish that it will clear up a head cold — I love it, but be warned! — and the salad bar reminds you of why mix-your-own salads were once a pleasure instead of the grisly affair that you find at Wendy's. The steaks and fish and plain and simple fare, but no less pleasurable because of that. We go there with company when the conversation, not the cuisine, is to be the primary focus of the evening; the cooking is always good, but not so exciting as to demand your full attention.
