Outback is Australian in decor and "cute" menu language, but in fact it's very much like Lone Star, complete with the big ol' knife and the mini-loaf of bread that you slice yourself. Outback is always crowded, partly because they don't overbuild — but there are reasons why it's worth dining early or late in order to get in at this no-reservations plain-cookin' restaurant. For me, the main reason is the coconut shrimp. Now, I'm no great lover of coconut, and I really hate all jams and jellies, so you have to realize how much courage it took me (and how much faith I had in Clark and Kathy Kidd!) even to try this appetizer. I'm glad I did. The coconut batter on the shrimp is delicious by itself, but when you dip the shrimp in the orange marmalade, the combination is amazing! In addition, Outback has an enjoyable caesar salad and — miracle of miracles, for a restaurant outside California — fresh-squeezed orange juice all the time. So I can have my orange-juice/ginger-ale combination drink whenever I dine there. Outback offers, besides an array of beef and chicken comparable to Lone Star's, fish that is quite acceptable, especially for family dining where haute cuisine is not going to be appreciated by the kids anyway.
