I remember when
I was told a story of
crushed velvet, candle wax,
and dried up flowers.
The figure on the bed,
all dressed up in roses,
calling, beckoning
to sleep,
offering a dream.

You bury your treasure
Where it can't be found
But your love is like a secret
That's been passed around
There is a silence that comes to a house
Where no one can sleep
I guess it's the price of love
I know it's not cheap

Georgia Pine, your heavy heart sways
When you turn the other way
Beneath the bright light clear white moon
You say the darkness comes too soon
Tears dampen the tile floor
A wind chime serenades the back kitchen door
Sugar scratches, she wants in from the heat
And you are lost in the silence you keep

Wow. Someone else remembers the Josh Joplin Group. I was almost convinced I hallucinated that brief portion of my life when they were around.

You and me and me we were the pretenders
We let it all slip away
In the end what you don't surrender
Well the world just strips away
Girl ain't no kindness in the face of strangers
Ain't gonna find no miracles here
Well you can wait on your blessings my darlin'
But I got a deal for you right here
I ain't lookin for prayers or pity
I ain't comin round searchin for a crutch
I just want someone to talk to
And a little of that human touch

Springsteen, "Human Touch"

I liked The Josh Joplin group too! Josh is actually from my hometown. On his first album he has a song titled "Dutch Wonderland" which is a small amusement park, oh so aptly named, here in the middle of Pennsylvania Dutch country. [Big Grin]

My favorite line in a Josh Joplin Group song is when he says, "I sound like Michael Stipe..."

--

Twenty years ago, saw a friend was walking by
And I stopped him on the street to ask him how it went, and all he did was cry
I looked him in the face, but I couldn't see past his eyes
Asked him what the problem was, he says "Here is your disguise"

Now he's hardly getting over it,
Hardly getting used to getting by

There they are standing all in a row

My My My I'm once bitten Twice shy Baby
My My My I'm once bitten Twice shy Baby

Woman You're a mess Gonna die in your sleep
There's blood on my amp and my Les Paul's beat
Can't keep you home You're messin' around
My best friend told me you're the best lick in town

You didn't know that rock-n-roll burned
So you bought a candle and you lived and you learned
You got the rhythm You got the speed

Here comes Johnny and he'll tell you the story
Hand me down my walking shoes
Here comes Johnny with the power and the glory
Backbeat the talking blues
He got the action, he got the motion
Oh yeah, the boy can play
Dedication, devotion
Turning all the nighttime into the day
He does the song about the sweet loving woman
He does the song about the knife
He does the walk, he does the walk of life

Took a walk with you
In the shadow of my shoes
Danced around the broken blues
In the dirty summer rain
Moonlight on the cars
Parked in single file at bars
With a thick and rosy smoke
Waving its busted hand

Bringing you down, can't bring you down
Bring you down, can't bring you down
Bring you down, can't hear the sound
Run through the river and into town
Pretty little moon with its head hung down
Chin up
Cheer up

Okay, this is ridiculous. I'm trying to find the lyrics to the first song in The Music Man, the one where the salesmen are on the train before they arrive at River City..
It goes something like

"You need a biscuit in an airtight sanitary package
Makes the cracker barrel obsolete, obsolete...
Who's gonna patronize a little bitty
Two-by-four kinda store anymore?"

But I can't find it anywhere online.

The song is "Rock Island", and here's a page that includes those lyrics:

Who's gonna ride your wild horses?
Who's gonna fall at the foot of thee?
Oh, the deeper I spin
Oh, the hunter will sin for your ivory skin
Took a drive in the dirty rain
To a place where the wind calls your name
Under the trees the river laughing at you and me
Hallelujah, heaven's white rose
The doors you open
I just can't close

It’s hard to listen to a hard, hard heart
Beating close to mine
Pounding up against the stone and steel
Walls that I won’t climb
Sometimes a hurt is so deep, deep, deep
You think that you’re gonna drown
Sometimes all I can do is weep, weep, weep
With all this rain falling down

I'm singing in the rain,
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feeling
I'm happy again.
I'm laughing at clouds.
So dark, up above,
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love.

Let the stormy clouds chase.
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
Have a smile on your face
I'll walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
And singin'
Just singin' in the rain

I'm dancin' and singin' in the rain

(Many of these songs use the word 'rain' so far all my lyrics have used the word 'rain' [Roll Eyes] )

A man will beg , a man will crawl
On the sheer face of love
Like a fly on a wall
It's no secret at all

It's no secret that a conscience can sometimes be a pest
It's no secret ambition bites the nails of success
Every artist is a cannibal, every poet is a thief
All kill their inspiration and sing about their grief

-U2, The Fly

See, and I bet you live a much fuller life than all those others who restrict themselves to only the eating of human flesh or flower arranging without bothering to become a well-rounded person.

She'll let you in her car
To go drivin' round
She'll let you into the parts of herself
That'll bring you down
She'll let you in her heart
If you got a hammer and a vise
But into her secret garden, don't think twice

Time, time, time
See what´s become of me
While I looked around
For my possibilities
I was so hard to please
Look around
Leaves are brown
And the sky
Is a hazy shade of winter

Paul Simon,* Hazy Shade of Winter

*performed, as we all appreciate, by the Bangles; however, I don't want to get Speed on me again, like he did when I (quite fairly in my view, as the song is made much richer by their performance) credited Urge Overkill with "Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon." Speed, perhaps with some justification felt wounded on behalf of Neil Diamond, who wrote the song, and called me on it. Not that I'm taking anything away from Neil Diamond; his performance of "They're Coming to America" is among the most imitated by I and my associates, in a hugely overexaggerated Diamond "I'm-really-constipated" voice.
Anyway, this credit is for you, Speed. So nyah. [Big Grin]

Sing a song

To last your whole life long
Don't worry that it's not good enough
For anyone else to hear
Sing
Sing a song

Sing out loud
Sing out strong
Sing of good things, not bad
Sing of happy, not sad

Singing this song makes me happy
I'm not happy with you
Singing this song makes me pale
Is that all
Is that all...
Is that all you want from me?

-U2 Is That All?

(it must be noted that a couple days prior to recording this song, which appears on the October album, some groupies in Portland stole all of the lyrics Bono had written. So, songs like this, while brilliantly improvised, are not neccessarily the most stunning U2 has produced [Razz] )

One, two,
Princes kneel before you
That's what I said now
Two princes, princes who adore you
Just go ahead now

The Spin Doctors, "Two Princes"

I have to confess, I know nothing about this band except for this song, which played incessantly on the radio a few years back. However, I've got a friend who is, for some reason, an *active* Spin Doctors fan, which is so unusual that I find it important to mention it when I see him. Since I was plotting our annual July Fourth baseball game with him today, and asking him about the welfare of the Spin Doctors, these lyrics happened to be in the forefront of my mind. And here, I encounter a golden opportunity to use them.

Things happen for a reason. I'm sure of it. [Smile]

She can kill with her smile
She can wound with her eyes
She can ruin your faith with her terrible lies
She'll only reveal what she wants you to see
She hides like a child but she's always a woman to me.

She can take you for love
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth but she'll never believe you.
She'll take what you give her as long as it's free.
She steals like a theif but she's always a woman to me.

Ooohh- She takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Ooohh- And she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind.

Ok, I've worn out my enthusiasm for my U2 kick. Let's play the Billy Joel lyric game!

I see these children with their boredom and their vacant stares
God help us all if we're to blame for their unanswered prayers
They roll the sidewalks up at night, this place goes underground
Thanks to the condo kings there's cable now in Zombietown

-Billy Joel, No Man's Land
