For those men that cannot follow simple instructions, this thread is about BIKINI AREA RAZOR RASH. Now, scoot!

For the ladies: how on earth do you solve this problem?! It's become like finding the solution to something that is unsolvable or, at the very least, really really hard. (Happy, Deidre?) We have all sorts of brilliant, beautiful and most likely razor-rash-free women around here. Is this simply something some women are cursed with, while others look pitifully from the other side of the rashless glass?

And if not, if all women can be razor-rash-free, then what are your arcane secrets?!?

Who else shaves the tops of their feet?

Why is it that the backs of my legs above my knees are so uncooperative 'bout me shaving them?

Really, I don't know. I just survive, and I don't spend a lot of time in a bathing.

I was thinking about the waxing bit. I have to ask, exactly how up-close-and-personal is that? That sounds quite up-close-and-personal. Anyone ever have it done? What's the process?

In a totally selfcentered thread diversion, I'd like to announce that I dyed part of the hair *on my head* pink this morning and it looks fantastic. [Big Grin]

If I can get pictures to come out okay, I'll link to them later.

I will assume that you mean the hair on your head.

Given the thread topic, you really can't be too specific here.

Interesting.

I had a patient page me when I was at home last Saturday for help with a small rash on her leg. When she came in to see me yesterday it was quite obviously a razor rash. We talked about a few things she could try, but really, I didn't know the answer. I could see she didn't want to hear, don't shave [Big Grin]

Anyone know something I don't?

Lotions and chemicals. I couldn't find any formal studies, but there are a million products that claim to solve it.

Apparently, they are either ingrown hairs (the hair curls in on itself before it exits the skin), or else the hair exits the skin and burrows into a neighboring pore. In both cases, the bump appears because of your body recognizes the hairs as foreign objects. You're having an immune reaction.

It's the worst with shaving because shaving the hairs makes that "sharp" and more easily penetrate the skin.

To fix that... all the products offered are lotions or chemical exfoliants. The lotions soften the skin and hopefully the hair, and the chemical exfoliants take off the layer of skin that is trapping the ingrown hairs so they (hopefully) exit the skin.

So... exfoliate and lotion constantly?

A How-To Guide
quote:
First, be sure to adequately wet the skin and the bikini hair. Since pubic hair is much more coarse than hair on other parts of the body, this saturating step is very important. Using a large amount of a moisturizing shaving cream, such as Aveeno Therapeutic Shaving Gel, helps soften the hair even more, making shaving easier.

When you begin to shave, pull the skin tight with your non-shaving hand. Then shave in upward strokes. Make sure there is adequate shaving cream on the hair and skin before each stroke. Without this protection, you’re likely to get red and bumpy after you shave.

Some experts recommend rubbing an ice cube over the shaved bikini area to reduce redness and discomfort. A nice application of a soothing after-shave product, such as California North After Shave Care can help make you more comfortable.

I've always wondered this too... That article was informative but didn't answer my main question about waxing which is the same as Katharina's concern; just how up-close-and-personal is it???

Also, anyone use like Bakini Bare or other hair removal lotions? How well do those work?

I fight a never-ending battle with thick, dark hair. It's pretty in some places, not so in others. I'm a big fan of facial waxing, but haven't tried it anywhere else. If I had a million dollars, the first thing I would do would be to get electrolysis on my legs. Wouldn't that be nice?

Various friends have had various levels of success with the gels and creams. I suggest you use the winter months to test them out so you don't have visible burns and rashes in the spring before finding the one that fits you. They're nice if they work for you, they last longer than shaving and aren't as painful as wax.

I've never gone for a wax, but I hear it's less touchie than a full body massage, but you do have to be comfortable with strange hands there. Personally, I think waxing is just too painful to do to sensitive areas.

I have an allergic rash reaction to chemical depilliatories like Nair, but preapplying hydrocortisone cream does wonders.

Never shave against the grain.

Yes, waxing there is a very intimate process, but
1) you can learn to do it yourself
2) it's very French.

If you opt for waxing, don't do it yourself. Otherwise, shave with a brand new blade and finish with BikiniZone...it's an awesome after-shave cream.

I've never had my bikini area waxed. I didn't do well having my legs waxed - the skin came off instead of the hair, so I decided waxing was probably out (especially for the sensative bikini line). A friend of mine was being waxed at the same time (including bikini area). She had a regular bikini wax (not a Brazilian - where almost EVERYTHING comes off). It didn't seem like a huge deal (in terms of squickiness).

I've had limited success in shaving due to soaking, new blades, shaving with (not against) the grain, exfoliating before and after (in terms of days, not immediately after), good shave gel, follow-up moisturizers. I've never been able to completely banish the bumps and rash though. I've decided to use an electric razor. I don't get as silky smooth as with a regular razor, but I don't get a rash either. It is easy and quick to maintain (every couple days or so). I've been doing this for probably almost a year.

Brettly, I'm not sure how good an idea this would be but the main ingredient in aspirin is salicylic acid, which is also the active ingredient in most commercial acne facewashes. The oil sounds like it's mostly there as a medium, possibly with the added benefit of lubricating the skin. I always shave my face before showering, and I use a facewash with salicylic acid when I shower. I find that my face doesn't ever get very irritated from shaving, nor do I get ingrown hairs (even though I shave against the grain).

So maybe facewash would be another possibility for the girls. Still, I'd want a professional's opinion on the possible hazards before I went applying it to my genitals.

Brettly - That was awesome. Whether or not it works (since saxon was so suspicious, and he's really SMRT) that was still KICKIN' RAD. I'm going to try some of the suggestions, like yours and the ice cube one. I'm also wondering if I should possibly fork out the dough for a professional waxing.

I'm also kicking around the idea of an electric razor, thanks to Lusti.

Thanks, guys, for being dedicated to removing unsightly rashes in Ralphie's unmentionable areas. It's just... well, it's a beautiful thing.

(Two pages for a bikini razor rash thread. HOOYAH!)
