Y'know, I have new thankfulness for the fact that I have never felt the need to wear a bikini.
OTOH, as far as legs go, I find depilitories much more skin-friendly that razors or electric shavers. Most of the name brands are fairly effective. (Neet, Nair, Sally Hansen -- all good)
Who remembers that torture device with the coils? What was it called again? An Epilady or somesuch? *shudders*

I heard another trick that helps a lot from a friend of mine that was having problems with her underarms. (For all the guys in this thread, I'd just like to say, pull up a chair.) She ended up letting her underarm hair grow out for 2 full months (yeah, totally gross!!) and then went and had it waxed. She said that it was as smooth as silk for 3 months after that with only a slight fuzz now and then that she could easily shave off. I think the same goes for the bikini area.
Here's to shaven underarms and bikini areas. Hey, these guys aren't even wearing pants!! They've shaved everything!!

Could someone tell me brand names and exactly what kind of stuff I want for things like shaving gels, etc? My mom isn't really into this stuff, so I don't really have anyone I can ask at home.

OK, this from my hairdresser, as she was ripping the hair off my eyebrows.
She said she never did bikini waxing, and this is why. I guess it is "in" right now with the college girls to wax their, um, rear ends.

I use a cheap, generic brand of cold wax from the drugstore - it works really well, and though it is a bit sticky, it's washable so it's easy to clean. I'll try to remember to post the brand name, if anyone's interested.

It's terribly fashionable to wear hip-huggers with g-strings.
The biggest problem I see with this (in addition to the fact that I'm not personally attracted to it) is that many girls/women do not understand that this style is a PRIVLEDGE, not a RIGHT.
I strategically hide my poochy stomach. And, for Jebus sake, you should, too.

You know Ralphie, you made this lurker look at this " girly thread" from the title... skipping to the bottom (no puns intended) without reading any other replies, Hugh Hefner figured this problem out years ago... it's called airbrush... or you could go for some melted wax and rip the problem away. ...

I don't understand the belly shirts+hip huggers when you have a belly. I really don't. I mean, you don't look GOOD with everything going all over the place. *confused*
I took me till this summer to wear clothes that actually clung to my body. I still get jeans a bit too big.
I'm all insecure and stuff.

Speaking as the person on the forum with the least amount of scruples, I would just like to say that I don't get why women wear tiny, little bikinis, anyway. They're not any more sexy than the bathing suits that that are, like, little short shorts, and let me tell you, if you think most women don't have the body to have their belly showing, that goes double for thong type stuff that requires you to shave so close to your holy of holies.

Why would anyone bother to shave their legs, underarms and bikini area? They seem like painful, annoying, uncomfortable places to remove hair from.

Mack, you're not fooling anyone. You've shown pictures on the 'rack. We know you can wear whatever you want. What's your body fat percentage now, anyway? -10%?

I tried about seven times to come up with a non-offensive, yet articulate response to that, Stormy. I've erased every one.
If you can't figure out why a woman wants this piece of advice but not for the sake of skanky clothes, then there's really no way I could possibly explain it to you on a public forum.
edit: added smilie so as to assure Stormy I was not offended IN THE LEAST and I hope he is not, either.

Woah, daddy. Was what I typed offensive? You're right. I don't understand why a woman would shave around there, except for cosmetic reasons. Maybe to prepare for surgery of some sort, but I don't think that's what you're discussing. I'm really super sorry if I said something wrong or implied something. I didn't mean to, honest.

Bah-having to shave your bikini line is evil. Not the person-the having to do. It is an act of which I don't know of many women that do not loath (yes, I am aware that sentence is not grammatically correct).
I ONLY shave my bikini when I have to. And as for the recent trend around here (boy, the things that men do talk about when women are not around) for men to shave their unmentionable area : I don't expect my man to shave his, he'd better not expect me to shave mine. The way we see it: the God/ess made us the way we are-hair is part of that.

So, it's a cosmetic thing for her husband? If so, that's sweet. What a nice thing to do for the one you love.

An authoritative answer from porn star Asia Carrera, proof that I will go to any extreme to assist Hatrack ladies.
"I just use a double-bladed razor with the little 'moisture-strip', nothing special. Don't shave every day, or even every other day, if you can help it, and that will help a lot with avoiding the little red bumpies and ingrown hairs. I always try to skip shaving for a couple days before a shoot, and then I'll shave at the end of a long, hot shower (that softens everything up) on the morning of the shoot. For stubborn red bumps, shaving nicks, etc, we often just dab a bit of foundation and powder on the area for coverup - but don't use makeup if you're wearing white/light lingerie, because it WILL smudge and stain if you're not super careful!"
And mentioning tampons and urinary tract infections won't help, it's been many a year before anything has embarrassed me. I have been known to pick up requested items on the way home that would stagger a normal man, and when asked to hold Teres' purse for her while shopping I don't use the standard guy technique of holding it like a shopping bag. I wear it proudly and even do a few twirls...

Alright....this is my answer to mack's post WAY at the beginning of this thread
quote: Why is it that the backs of my legs above my knees are so uncooperative 'bout me shaving them?
I think the reason is cuz the hairs lay a diffferent way. I find that if I shave top to bottom, instead of the other way around, that usually works. Of course, then you have to deal with little tiny stubble when ever you sit down.

dagnabit, where is that thread about my Nair incident. After that experience I'm not a huge Nair fan. I second CT's advice to shave with the "grain" of the hair. QEFSG also dittos this repeatedly. And contrary to one comment "with the grain" is generally (on all the nekkid females I've seen, and I've seen a lot because I used to be on a swim team) not "UP" as in towards your belly button, but "DOWN" as in towards your knee. Look at your own hair though, and figure out if it changes direction as it gets closer to the skin between your leg joint and crotch. 9 times out of 10 this is where the bumps form because you haven't changed the direction you are shaving. It is more akward to bend your arm to get it into that position but well worth the effort in lack of pain and rash later.
Also Brettly, as far as I know pharmacies don't sell NITROGLYCERIN the explosive except for preventing heart attacks. I suspect you meant ordinary GLYCERINE instead. Also as far as the salicylic acid goes, I have used acne cream with salicylic acid on razor bumps with great sucess, because it reduces inflammation and dries the little infection out.

I don't know how much it costs, getting one's bikini area waxed, but it can't be really cheap. In the long term, wouldn't it be cheaper to go to one of the places that does hair removal with a laser? It's far cheaper than electrolysis, and from what I understand after 5 or 6 treatments the hair stops growing back.

Noemon, I tried that with one of those laser pointer things, but the hair in my nose just keeps growing.

Random thoughts: I'm totally boggled by the idea of shaving with the grain. When I'm doing my bikini line I'll go with the grain first, then go back against the grain to get nice and smooth. Underarms get shaved every which way. Legs I just go against the grain. Maybe I just have unusually tough hair? I just don't see how you can get anywhere shaving with the grain.
I use dove soap and water because I know I'm not allergic to it.
I'm with the porn star on not shaving every day. Every other day works well for me, but I don't like waiting any longer than that or it takes more strokes, which seems to be the kicker for me. The less strokes with the razor going against the grain, the less bumps, which is why I'll shave with the grain first.
As to why...for me it's just part of grooming and feeling clean.
I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the asprin solution worked. Another thing to try might be witch hazel. Though I don't know, that might sting.
You know what I really hate? Taking all that time shaving in the shower, then stepping out into the freezing cold bathroom and getting goosebumps.

I really question why this thread is *supposed* to be restricted to females. It's really about shaving, and we shave too.
I have the same problem with my face, and I think the grain issue is a serious one. The hair on my neck grows out in about 3 different directions, and I get a rash, especially where the grain changes.
I find that a double bladed razor makes the rash much worse. In fact, I started using a straight razor several years ago because it doesn't confine the whiskers and: 1, force them downward and scrub the skin like a wire brush brush, and 2, doesn't do that "lift and cut closer" nonsense that allows the second blade to cut off the tip of every raised pore. It also allows you to shave against the grain for that reason.
I don't recommend the ladies attempting the gymnastics required to use a straight razor in the bikini area, but it works well on the legs (I used to race bicycles) especially when you're shaving hair, not yesterday's stubble. But if you're currently using a double bladed razor, try a single bladed bic.
I've never heard of nitroglycerin oil, but it is curious to note: Salicylic acid and nitroglycerin are both blood thinners. This may prevent blood clotting in the rash, and prevent the rash from being so red and full of little scabs, so even if the surface is irritated, it doesn't look so bad. An astringent (after shave) does the same thing by squeezing the pores shut, and forcing the blood back into the skin.
One other trick: shave with COLD water. This prevents excess blood flow into the skin, and also lifts the hair naturally (goosebumps), so the razor can cut close, the way the double edged razors claim they do, but without the polka-dot rash. Warm water feels good, but it actually gives no benefit.

Also, aloe vera gel (you can buy it in a bottle, or get a plant and squish it out of the leaves). Not aloe vera lotion, just pure gel from the plant. Keep it in the refrigerator. The stuff is magic.
And in addition to shaving rash, if you burn yourself, put it on a paper towel and use it to cool the burn, and you'll be AMAZED.

Are you SERIOUS? Anytime I get goosebumps while shaving, know what happens? They get cut OFF. The razor burn is way worse then. In fact, if I'm shaving my legs and I get a chill, I stop until it has completely gone away before shaving anymore.

Glenn - Thank you for your suggestions. I've tried aloe vera, and for some reason it hasn't solved the ding-dang problem.
The reason I made it a girly thread was because I was talking about the naughty bits, and I was covering my bases.
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I shall implement them promplty but without using a time frame so as not to squick anyone out.
(Chris - considering your stand on porn, it must have been quite the sacrifice. You're such a giver. Of course, it was some of the most helpful advice.)
