OK, so I just turned 21. I am not really an alcohol drinker by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm also not adverse to it. What I really want to do, instead of going out and getting drunk every night, really try some different kinds of drinks to see what I like.
So, what's your favorite alcoholic drink?

I'm partial to peach schnapps, myself, I'll admit, and most kinds of brandy. But if I'm actually out drinking, I usually go with rum and coke or a Manhattan. These are two classic and very popular drinks -- with numerous versions -- that drinkers will expect you to know.
You should also become familiar with screwdrivers, fuzzy navels, margaritas, Cosmopolitans, mint juleps, Tom Collinses, vodka "martinis," real martinis, and the venerable gin and tonic. My wife likes Shirley Temples, but also tequila neat. Go figure.

Vodka tonic with grey goose - My favorite drink. Great for any occassion.
Apple Martini - A good after dinner drink. Also a good ice breaker on dates. I usually order this for a girl if she wants me to recommend something.
Glenlivet Scotch - I like to bring a bottle to the Hollywood Bowl and follow it with some green tea ice cream. Posts: 1592 | Registered: May 2000

vwiggin, who makes green tea ice cream? I've never seen it anywhere but in japanese-style cafes and such...

Eaquae Legit - I get my ice cream at a magical place I call "parent's fridge".
I think my parents get them at a local Japanese supermarket called Marukai (I live in SoCal). Do you have any Japanese supermarkets in your area? Here's a recipe from about.com.

My absolute favorite drink is a caipirinha. However, I don't order it unless I am certain that it will be made correctly. So I normally go with a rum and coke/cuba libre (with bacardi or better as the rum - I cannot stand any form of Captain Morgan's).
I haven't quite mastered the proportions of a caipirinha myself, but if you ever go to a Brazilian restaurant or club, order one. It's cachaça (a Brazilian liquor distilled from sugar cane - it's not a rum, but it's not disimilar), sugar, lime juice and ice.
Another classic that's good to have in your repertoire is gin and tonic - besides it looks cool under blacklights.

I am quite partial to strawberry margaritas.
A cheap, very tasty drink to make at home is bellini (sp?), which is champagne and peach nectar. I am trying to remember the proportions- I think 50%-50%?

That's crazy.
I like really good (too expensive for me to ever buy) tequila neat. They have tastings at the Mexican embassy in D.C. I also like decent tequila with a sangrita (not sangria) chaser. There's a bar a couple blocks from the pier in Pacific Beach I get it at when I'm in San Diego.
Generally, though, a good pale beer (Corona, Rolling Rock, Heineken) or a Cuba Libre (because it sounds cooler than rum and coke) will do quite nicely for me.
That and Yellowtail Shiraz are pretty much it for me and alcohol.

Someday you must play big spender and have Del Dueno. Amazing. :: kisses fingers and splays them dramatically ::

Sara, you might like Glenlivet as a single malt (which we have, and Glenfidditch too). But could I bribe you with a taste of Johnie Walker Blue Label to come visit once the puppies arrive*?

The venerable rum and coke is a good one. Recently I found a brand of rum that is mixed with tequila in the bottle -- the rum and coke I made with that stuff is my favourite of all the rum and cokes I've ever had. Tasty!
I also like polar bears, but that's actually a shot. I just drink it out of a glass because it's so very tasty (it tastes exactly like an After Eight chocolate). Also, speaking of shots that are pleasurable to drink from a glass, Bailey's is wonderful stuff.
Screwdrivers, as has been mentioned already. Some martinis can be quite tasty.

Also, I love Mojitos. When lazy, I just smush up some mint from the garden and put it in my Paul Newman's limeade and vodka.

Well, the standard rum and Coke is rather nice. When I'm drinking at home (which I hardly ever do), I usually just have port or cognac. When I'm out at a bar, I get Amaretto sour. Not really sure what's in it, but it tastes great.
But I'm pretty much a non-drinker, basically. I hardly ever drink alcohol. Most kinds of alcohol I've never even tried. I've never had gin, but I've had tonic water, and it is nasty.

There's a drink called a baby Guinness. Put kaluah in a tall shot glass about 2/3 up, add Bailley's the rest of the way. The kaluah is the beer, the Bailley's the head. Very fun in a cheesy sort of way.

Both fine, fine ideas.

I like the idea of rum and coke...but the question is, what kind of rum? I've heard good things about Malibu...and not just because I love the commercials.
On a related note, I will share with you all my VERY limited drinking experience:
Two Beers: Yuengling Lager and a Miller Light Three Glasses of Wine: One Red, Two White One Mike's Hard Cranberry Lemonade (Yum) One Shot of Southern Comfort
Just wanted to state that so you understand why I'm asking for help, hehe.

I love the Captain, but sometimes, the Coke just begs for Myers.
The difference between good tequila and bad tequila is like the difference between powdered milk and milk. Or something.

Malibu is coconut flavored rum. I'm not a big fan of it in coke, but I do like it in orange juice and other fruity drinks.
And I would just like to point out that I am a good sister. Every year for Christmas and my brother's birthday, I get him beers he's never tried (thanks to me, he has several favorite beers). This year, I discovered he liked tequila, so I got him some añejo Patron. Too bad he didn't let me try any of it... stupid brother.

I've been looking, but no luck. The Corazon bottles are the closest in shape, but the neck was much shorter and the front looked flatter. Plus it was light blue.
Huh. Now this is going to drive me crazy. Of course, I might have been a little tipsy at the time.

The color was a little bit lighter and the bottle had a rough pattern, not smooth except where the label was.

"A rounded entry leads to a clean, medium-bodied palate, with a subtle drying, woody quality. Precise, snappy finish." Said in an English accent, this could be John Cleese describing something... probably dirty. But maybe sporty. But definetly not alcoholic.

For silliness sake, I'll just say Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Nothing like "having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick".
For seriousness sake, my favorite to make and drink would have to be Midori Sours. Very simple, and oh so tasty.

Captain Morgan's is good, Captain Morgan's Private Stock is better. Good straight or mixed with Coke.
Irish Car Bomb - You need a glass cup and a shot glass (or double shot glass), as well as a Guiness, Bailey's, and Jameson's (or another whiskey). Pour the Guiness into the cup. Fill the shot glass most of the way with Bailey's, and top off with Jameson's. Drop the shot glass into the cup; it should float. Chug as fast as possible.

Oh no, Liz. I *loooove* gin (Bombay Sapphire) and tonics.
Last time we flew internationally, Tony and I brought back 4.5 litres of Bombay Sapphire between us.
(So cheap duty free).
I haven't really tried many other gin based cocktails though - apart from the classic martini which is way too strong for me. I'm not a big fan of neat liquor.

I'm rather unadventurous when it comes to alcohol... Captain and Coke, vodka and cranberry juice, Chardonnay, sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon. Ive got a couple other bottles in my cabinet purchased for company that either weren't finished off or in a couple instances never opened. Maybe tonight I should crack open the Dreamsicle mix.
