Hi!

I know there are several DC area Hatrackers here. I've been busy every weekend and most week nights with one thing or another (I admit that the activity is sometimes "going to sleep at seven o'clock") since I got here, but I'm feeling rested, caught up, and ready to play now. Matt is still gone - he's in Utah for three weeks. He is also planning on seeing A Prairie Home Companion with his family while he's there, so I was thinking - does anyone in D.C. area want to see it on Saturday? It seems like a perfect Hatrack-y thing to do. What do you think?

I totally thought you meant going to see a taping of the radio show, as they sometimes do it on the road. And was surprised it wasn't sold out this close.

I went to the show at the Greek Theater for my 19th birthday present. It was the fulfillment of a practically lifelong dream. [Big Grin]

The Fitzgerald theater is maybe 6 blocks from where I'm sitting now, and I'm a member of MPR, so I get priority on purchasing tickets. But I've never gone. Someday I'll get around to it.

Hubby and I got to see them tape the radio show out at Wolf Trap a couple weeks ago. It was so cool! I can't wait to see the movie! I'd go with you Saturday but my Mom is having surgery and so won't be able to watch the baby! Enjoy it for me!

Aaah!

I'm going with my mom and little sister to see Cars in Georgetown. They voted for Prarie Home Companion...I voted not against it, but rather in favor of the Pixar flick [Smile]

Otherwise, absolutely yes.

Pssst - Lunch next week?

Kasie: Lunch next week will be perfect. [Smile] I'll even be downtown by then - where do you work?

I figured it was a stretch - it's very last second. Maybe we could turn this thread into a planned get together? What about a couple of weeks from now? I'll be out of town the weekend of July 7, but besides that, there's nothing particular planned in the next month or so. What do y'all think? [Smile]

NO! I'm with Ornico, if it had been about a month ago, I totally would have been able/willing to go. Now, however, I'm home in Boston and won't be able to see you. I think we should plan something for September so that I can hang out with all you cool kids.

I'm DC area, and John Van Pelt is honorary-soon-to-be-officially DC area. July sounds good to me, too.

Karl, just be extra cautious -- especially if there is a lot of giggling and whispering!

I'm free pretty much whenever except the 7th and the 14th (weekends) of July. I work on Sunday all day so I can't do it then, but Fridays & Saturdays are perfect.

Katie, I'll e-mail you w/ my work address etc. I get into the office at 2:30 p.m. so if you have an hour lunch or something we could meet at 1 and then I can head to work.

Oh, y'all are going to kill me - I feel like I'm being very flaky. July 1 we will be out of town, and July 8 I will be out of town. It looks like the only possibility would be June 24, but it looks like

This Saturday would be too soon anyway, but it's also Matt's Saturday Night Discussion Group where they bring in speakers and everyone talks about Mormony things, usually about the various dialectics between the church, Mormons, and the rest of America (politics, art (that was Matt's), hip hop, the middle east). It's open to public, so people are welcome to come, but it means Saturday is full already and that's not necessarily an activity everyone would enjoy.

The only possibility could be June 24, which seems both very soon and possibly has something scheduled in it. But it's the best day before August.

I have an idea.

My proposal is either June 24, or, and this has the advantage of giving more time to plan but the disadvantage of being far away [Frown] , August 19 or 26. What do y'all think? I have to admit that at this frazzled moment, when I realized that there are seven weeks before the wedding and my bridal shop said it would take six weeks to get more fabric in so my dress currently has neither shoulders nor sleeves and this presents a dillemma, I would kind of prefer August. But that's far away. I've been in D.C. for two months already and haven't seen anyone, especially since Kasie and I missed each other for lunch today after some confusion about the day. [Frown]

Alternatively, I have to admit that June 24 grows in possibility and estimation if someone would like that plan it...? *hopeful smile* What do y'all think?

Okay, how about August 20? [Smile] It sounds like it would work better for everyone, and yay! rivka can possibly come!! [Smile] That tips it, I think.

Hm....so, what should we do? There's a zillion possibilities around here, most of which I'm sure I don't know yet.

Ok, we can upgrade from "strong possibility" to "extreme probability" -- my ex has agreed to take the kids that weekend, and my boss has ok'd me taking the 21st off.

Looks like American has flights from LAX in that direction at about midnight Saturday. Do I want to arrive at DCA, IAD, or BWI? (That is, which is likely to get me close to a relatively cheap motel and/or wherever we're meeting up?)

August 20 would be perfect for me.

rivka - I don't know about hotels so much, but I'd think that DCA would probably be the most convenient since it's just across the river from DC and has metro access. BWI is a thirty minute drive from DC (assuming no traffic); I think Dulles is about the same.

If you do wind up flying into BWI and need transportation, I can probably help with that since I'll be living not too far from there.

Hrm. Looks like flying into Dulles means I could do a non-stop, and it would be cheaper. Are there public transportation options?

There's a shuttle to one of the Falls Church metro stops on the Orange line. The Dulles website and Washington Metro site have more details about it.

If I'm interpreting this correctly, it's doable but something of a pain?

But it seems to be far the best option in terms of both flight times and prices. (At least, for those that fit my particular needs, like wanting nonstops and needing to leave LAX after 11 pm Saturday.)

(Reservation is on hold for 24 hours, pending any other comments/suggestions from locals.)

Dulles is fine - it used to be the main airport. The main disadvantage is that there is no metro access, but we can work something out. Matt's even flown in and out of Baltimore before to get a cheaper flight. [Smile]

The West Falls Church Metro is 1/4 mile from my house. The shuttles are pretty good and pretty fast.

Dulles is far better than BWI. National is a bit better than Dulles, assuming we meet near DC or inside the beltway Virginia. It has its own Metro stop.

But Dulles works just fine.

Excellent. I am going to confirm the ticket right now. [Smile]

Anyone want to recommend a motel? Or tell me what area we're meeting up, so I can look for something nearby?

(Although that's not nearly as urgent as tickets. I imagine it will make little difference either for availability or price as long as I reserve a room before the end of July.)

Ooh, this is exciting!

As far as hotels/motels go...I would keep checking Travelzoo's Washington, D.C. section if you want to stay downtown. Downtown is probably ideal because it's close to public transportation, that way you'd only have to get back and forth to the airport area once.

But the cheap motels will all be out near the airport. It's just that without a car there's no good way to get back and forth besides Metro-Airport Shuttle-Hotel Shuttle. Blech.

For example, this deal has $99/night on Capitol Hill. Not sure what your price range is, but this is pretty good for in the city. If you're looking at the $60-$80 range, the airport motels are probably your best option....but even they'll be hard to find.

Thanks, Kasie. Those both look great.

I don't know where I want to stay. Because [heavy hint] I don't know where we're meeting up. [/heavy hint]

Would some of the locals like to make some suggestions? Would it help if I linked to the several kosher restaurants in the area?

Well, I live down the block from the Jewish Community Center. There's tons of stuff to do around that area, in particular a 24-hour bookstore/cafe/bar a few blocks from my apartment...it's called Kramerbooks and Afterwords and it's my very favorite place in the whole city.

Seems right up Hatrack's alley, too.

I put forward Dupont Circle as a possiblity for meetup location...

Sounds good to me. [Smile] I don't know anyone else's plans, but I'll need to eat both lunch and supper that day. [Wink] Perhaps the JCC Cafe for lunch and Eli's for dinner? (Or the reverse, although the JCC Cafe seems to only be open to 8 pm, and Eli's is open until 9.)

Although, both are meat restaurants. Then again, none of the other kosher restaurants in the DC area are that close. No idea how easy/difficult it is to get anywhere on the Metro, and no idea what sorts of schedules other people will be on. [Dont Know]

There is also a kosher Krispy Kreme nearby (I think), but they don't see to have actual, y'know, food. [Wink]

I vote Spy Museum.

I'm willing to eat anywhere, I guess. Kosher deli's are a bit of a tease for me, since so much of my favorite deli meat is pig-based, but I can deal. [Smile]
